Julie May Hill Murder 1980

Julie Hill was reported missing by her mom on 18 July 1980 from Duluth Minnesota.   Julie lived at 2808 West third Street in Duluth Minnesota.

Jeanette Randall, Julie’s mother, reported her missing under suspicious circumstances. Her apartment was left unlocked, with food still cooking on the stove. Her purse was found there but no notes of where she may have gone. Her dogs were still at her home, unattended, leaving her mother very suspicious of her daughter’s whereabouts.

Donald Louis Bloomer was Julies boyfriend at the time of her death.  He moved out before Julie went missing.  He was questioned at the time she went missing.

Jeanette Randall passed away on 25 August 2003.  Sadly she went to her grave not knowing what happened to Julie!

In 2004 Duluth Detectives re-opened her case on information found in the file that had not been followed up on. Julie’s boyfriend of the time was questioned by Detectives. Pressure put on him caused a confession of an accidental shooting leading to Julie’s demise. Donald Louis Bloomer gave vague information claiming her body had been wrapped in carpet and left in a nearby wooded area.  That area was thoroughly searched, but nothing found.

Bloomer pleaded guilty in 2005 to second-degree manslaughter by culpable negligence with a firearm in the 1980 shooting of the 20-year-old woman. Bloomer said he was aiming the gun at a wall and fired just as Hill walked into the room in front of him.  DuluthTribune

Information from Julie’s mother about the day she searched for Julie led Police to believe Julie may be buried in the yard of Donald Bloomer. The house was destroyed and razed. Investigators went over the property, digging in several possible places but still no Julie. Without the body but with facts and a confession, Donald Bloomer was arrested and tried for the death of Julie Hill. His sentence was 3 years, releasing him in 2007.

Bloomer received a settlement from the City of Duluth for $20,000.00 for demolishing his house to search for Julie.

  1. Hi Alicia! So sorry for your loss! Yes this pos is still walking around! only 3 years in jail for murder is unthinkable! He plead guilty to 2nd degree manslaughter, why didn’t he tell where she is? The judicial system in Minnesota lacks integrity!

  2. I don’t believe bloomer killed her. He was destroyed when they demolished his house for.no.reason and trashed everything he owned for no reason. He lied so he could go to prison and actually have a place to live.

  3. I’m her cousin her dad was my dad’s uncle I don’t know much about this but I know there’s an episode on cold case about it does anyone know where I can find that episode

  4. Hi Julia!

The title is: A Sister Lost/Rumors of Murder
Season 4 episode 21 [some places have it listed as episode 22]

I believe it can be seen on the pluto app or Aetv app. Sometime you can find the show on-demand.

  5. That guy about the house and goingb to jail for 3 years cause he didn’t have a place to live!!! Thas just insane . Is Donald bloomer still alive has anyone followed up with him?. Age helps things settle a bit easier and makes things easier to talk about imo. I would love to know and follow up with an official interview with him let’s solve this for the family for good!

  6. Hi Jason,

Thanks for your comment!! As far as I know he is still alive. And haven’t found an obituary on him. He should be about 75 years old, it would be nice to find Julie and put her to rest. Yeah no one really believes he went to jail because he had no where to live.
