John Lee Edmondson in jail for 25 Feb shooting

A 52 year old suspect is sitting in Ramsey County jail for the murder of Larry Jiles Jr., 34, of Hugo and Troy Kennedy, 37 of St. Paul.

The suspect John Lee Edmondson, was arrested Thursday 2 March and charged by prosecutors.

A search warrant affidavit dated Sunday said an aunt of Jiles reported they started cleaning and vacuuming about 5 pm Saturday. They began telling people it was time to leave, but some people weren’t going. Jiles started telling people to go, according to the affidavit.

A witness saw a man she called “Nell” standing over Larry Jiles Jr., who was lying on the ground, and she yelled “Nell.” He didn’t respond, got in a vehicle and drove away.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the community room and saw Edmonson in the footage.  They also reviewed hospital emergency room parking lot footage and saw Edmonson appearing to drop two injured people at the hospital and then leaving.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UPDATE

We’ve made an arrest in the killings of Larry Jiles Jr. and Troy Kennedy, who were shot on Feb. 25 on Dale Street North.

John Lee Edmondson, 52, was arrested by SPPD officers. He’s currently in the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of Murder 2.

St. Paul police press release:

At about 5:15 p.m., officers were called to the 500 block of Dale Street North, Kings Crossing by Episcopal Homes, on a report of person shot. When officers arrived, they found a chaotic scene and learned that five people had been shot. Officers requested Saint Paul Fire medics to respond to the scene but were informed some of the injured people were transported to local hospitals in private vehicles. One adult male was pronounced dead by Saint Paul Fire medics and another adult male was pronounced dead at United Hospital after arriving in a private vehicle.

Two victims are being treated at Regions Hospital. One is an adult male is in critical condition and the other is an adult female is in stable condition. One adult female is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at United Hospital. All the victims had apparent gunshot injuries.

Preliminary information indicates the shooting occurred in the parking lot on the 500 block of Dale Street North after a celebration of life event that was attended by many people. At the conclusion of the event, an altercation occurred, and shots were fired in the lot. Investigators with the police department’s homicide unit will be interviewing witnesses to understand what occurred and who is responsible. The forensic services and video management units are processing the scene for evidence to tell a story of what occurred.

A motive in this case has not been determined, although investigators do not believe it was a random shooting. No arrests have been made.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies to positively identify the victims and determine their exact causes of death. That information, along with any updates in the case, will be released on the police department’s Twitter page, @sppdmn.

Larry Jiles Jr., 34, of Hugo was killed in the shooting and Troy Kennedy, 37 of St. Paul.

These are 4th and 5th homicides of 2023.
