Suspect arrested, charged in Newport transit center homicide
07 February 2023 NEWPORT, Minn. – A Newport man has been charged with murder after another man was found dead in an SUV at the Newport Transit Center late Monday morning.
Washington County Sheriff investigators arrested Sylvester T. Jones, 37, at his home Monday evening in connection to the death of his cousin, 38-year-old Terrell E. McIntyre, who was found shot to death just before 11:00 that morning. Deputies were called to the transit center parking lot for an “unknown medical situation” after a witness saw McIntyre slumped over in the driver’s seat of an SUV. Responding deputies located McIntyre dead in the driver’s seat and later determined he was shot multiple times.
The witness told authorities he saw a man leaving the area about 20 minutes earlier, and review of nearby surveillance showed a man walking away from the SUV toward Maxwell Avenue. Investigators worked with local businesses to review outside surveillance footage and track the suspect as he left the area. Investigation into prior law enforcement contacts led authorities to a home on the 1700 block of 1st Avenue, just blocks from where the shooting took place.
The Washington County Multi-Jurisdictional SWAT team assisted in executing a search warrant at the residence at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday, and Jones was taken into custody without incident. Jones admitted to his involvement in his cousin’s death and a gun was located on the floor of his bedroom.
“Any loss of life is an incredible shock to the community, and I am proud of the dedicated investigators and law enforcement partners who worked so hard to bring closure to all those involved,” said Sheriff Dan Starry. “Our community partnerships were instrumental in helping to quickly solve this crime and I am thankful to all of those who assisted in this investigation.”
The Washington County Attorney’s Office formally charged Jones with 2nd Degree Intentional Homicide in a complaint filed Tuesday afternoon. He remains in custody at the Washington County Jail awaiting his first court appearance.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has been contracting with the City of Newport for law enforcement services since 2016. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assisted with the investigation.
