From St Paul PD:

ONE PERSON WAS KILLED AND TWO WERE INJURED IN A SHOOTING IN SAINT PAUL’S GREATER EAST SIDE NEIGHBORHOOD

At about 7:45 p.m., officers responded to the area of Hazelwood Street and Maryland Avenue East after multiple 911 callers and an officer on patrol reported hearing shots fired in the area. These calls eventually led officers to the 1200 block of Hazelwood Street where three teenage female victims were located. All three were suffering from apparent gunshot injuries. Saint Paul officers rendered first aid to all three victims and called for medics to respond. All three victims were transported by Saint Paul Fire medics to Regions Hospital. One of the female victims was pronounced dead at Regions Hospital. The injuries to the other two are not considered life-threatening.

Saint Paul officers secured the scene and began canvassing the area for witnesses. Investigators with the police department’s homicide unit are currently working to determine what led to the shooting and who is responsible. In addition, members of the video management unit are looking for any surveillance video that could help determine what happened.

At approximately 9 p.m., officers were called to a residence on the report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they located an adult female who was suffering from apparent stab wounds to her upper body.

Multiple witnesses on scene were holding an adult male suspect. Officers took the man into custody.

Saint Paul Fire medics responded to the scene and transported the victim to Regions Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Homicide investigators are working to determine what led to this incident. The forensic services unit will be processing the scene for evidence.

Cheri Prokop, 23 was found dead shortly after noon on 2 December 1988 by strangulation. Her 4-year-old daughter was found unharmed inside the apartment. Police believe two intruders, seen by the little girl, killed her mother.

When police arrived they found a ground level window removed. The apartment door was also unlocked. When police entered the apartment they found Cheryl’s daughter Katelyn unharmed. They found Cheryl upstairs in the hallway between the bedrooms strangled with the cord from her blinds.

James died as he was pushing kids out of the way of danger as gunshots erupted while James and others were attending a 6 p.m. memorial gathering for Naressa “NuNu” Turner who died as a result of a shooting in the same Dayton’s Bluff alley, three years prior also on October 14.

While the brief 15 minute vigil of family and friends was underway, witnesses said a vehicle pulled up and its occupants started firing. It is not believed that James, a longtime friend of NuNu’s family was the target. “They were just shooting at everybody,” a witness said. James was attending the vigil held in the alley at Cypress Street and Reaney Avenue with his two older sisters.

The sadness of family and friends of James have led them to raise funds to offer a reward through Crime Stoppers of Minnesota of up to $5,000 for information submitted to Crime Stoppers while remaining anonymous. It is hoped that somebody who knows the shooter(s) can help in finding those responsible while knowing that their communication with Crime Stoppers is confidential and they will not be revealed to the public. The murderer of NuNu, Joseph Haywood Campbell has been convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Deadly shooting at vigil for St. Paul murder victim

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) – One person is dead after a shooting on St. Paul’s eastside Wednesday evening. The victim was attending a gathering to remember Naressa Turner, who was killed in a gang-related shooting 3 years ago.

Wednesday’s shooting happened near the intersection of Cypress Street and Reaney Avenue at about 6 p.m. When St. Paul police arrived, they learned a man had been shot and driven to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Synika George James, 37, of St. Paul.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
