The Complainant submits this complaint to the Court and states that there is probable cause to believe Defendant committed the following offense(s):

COUNT I
Charge: Murder – 2nd Degree – Without Intent – While Committing a Felony
Minnesota Statute: 609.19.2(1), with reference to: 609.19.2(1) Maximum Sentence: 40 YEARS
Offense Level: Felony
Offense Date (on or about): 05/04/2022
Control #(ICR#): 22094284
Charge Description: That on or about 5/4/2022 in Hennepin County, Minnesota, Otis Jackson, did without intent to effect the death of any person, cause the death of Victim A, a human being, while committing or attempting to commit the felony offense of malicious punishment of a child.

COUNT II
Charge: Malicious Punishment of a Child
Minnesota Statute: 609.377.1, with reference to: 609.377.4 Maximum Sentence: 5 YEARS AND/OR $10,000
Offense Level: Felony
Offense Date (on or about): 05/04/2022
Control #(ICR#): 22094284
Charge Description: That on or about 5/4/2022 in Hennepin County, Minnesota, Otis Lee Jackson, the parent, legal guardian or caretaker of Victim B a person under the age of 4, did by an intentional act and/or a series of intentional acts with respect to Victim B evidence unreasonable force and/or cruel discipline that was excessive under the circumstances and the punishment resulted in bodily harm to the head, eyes, neck, or otherwise caused multiple bruises to the body.

STATEMENT OF PROBABLE CAUSE
Complainant has investigated the facts and circumstances of this offense and believes the following establishes probable cause:

On May 4, 2022, Minneapolis Police Officers were dispatched to a known residence located in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, on a child not breathing call. Upon arrival, officers located Victim A as well as his mother, Navonna Latina West. The mother was attempting CPR on Victim A. Victim A was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Officers at the scene and at the hospital, observed numerous injuries on Victim A’s body, including bruising and scratches. An autopsy was performed and the medical examiner observed blunt force injuries in various stages of healing. The medical examiner determined that the cause of Victim A’s death was complications of multiple blunt force injuries and ruled the manner of death a homicide.

After observing the injuries to Victim A, officers had his four-month-old brother, Victim B, brought to the hospital for an examination.

Complainant observed that four-month-old brother-Victim B had the following visible injuries:
– Bruising on left side of body.
– Scabbing, possible lesions, under scrotum sack
– Large possible chemical burn around and under belly button
– Four possible burn marks on the back
– Blood in right eye, scarring across bridge of nose between eyes, loss of pigmentation on the side of head leading up to both eyes.

A Child Abuse Pediatrician treated Victim B and observed several injuries to his face.
It was also determined that Victim B suffered multiple rib fractures and had fluid is his abdomen.
There was also a positive test result showing that Victim B had been exposed to fentanyl.

Further investigation into this case revealed that the abusive injuries to both victims were caused by the mother’s boyfriend, Otis Lee Jackson, DOB 4/10/1993, “Defendant” herein.

The mother reported that Defendant and her were living together with the children.
The mother reported that she did not cause the injuries to either child victim.
The mother reported that there would be times that the mother would leave the children in the care of Defendant.

In the days before Victim A’s death, the mother noticed that Victim A was very weak, had bruises on his side and behind his ear, and was throwing up. When the mother noticed the burns on Victim B’s stomach, she asked Defendant if he had accidentally burned Victim B with a cigarette. Defendant replied that he did not know, which did not make sense to the mother.

The mother reported that she had wanted to take the children to the hospital but whenever she would ask Defendant, Defendant would say he had something to do and take the mother’s car and phone. The mother did not press Defendant for more information because she knew it would turn in to an argument where Defendant would physically assault her.

The mother reports Defendant being physically abusive towards her during their relationship. Defendant has previously been convicted of Assault 2 against the mother who was pregnant with Victim A at the time of that offense in 2019.

Complainant is aware of a prior case where Defendant caused similar injuries to a 2 month old child when Defendant was around 14 years old. In that case, Defendant claimed that he accidentally burned the child with hot soup. The child was examined by a physician who found that “the appearance of the burns is not consistent with an accidental mechanism of injury. Specifically, the linear and circular appearance is sharply demarcated and indicates prolonged contact with a heated, circular object. It is also concerning
that the burns are positioned directly over each nipple, a finding which supports a diagnosis of inflicted
burns rather then accidental injury.

The defendant is in custody.

Case No: 2022-03203
Decedent: Jackson, Ona’Je Prince Sincere
A judge, Sixth Judicial District Judge Andrew Peterson set Mike Carbo’s bail at $1 million! Carbo is charged with second degree murder of Nancy Daugherty on 16 July 1986 in Chisholm Minnesota.

The Chisholm PD contacted the BCA about providing a DNA sample to Parabon NanoLabs, a lab that analyzes genealogy databases and helps LE identify case leads. The BCA lab coordinated with the company to provide a DNA sample from Daugherty’s decades-old evidence. Parabon identified Carbo as a suspect in the case.

From the court documents:

→ LE learned that Carbo was living less than a mile from the crime scene in 1986.

→ Carbo attended school with Daugherty’s children.

→ LE began surveilling Carbo’s Chisholm apartment on July 23.

→ Authorities collected DNA evidence from Carbo’s garbage they watched him carry outside. The trash was sent in for DNA testing.

→ LE learned the DNA collected from Carbo’s garbage also matched evidence collected from the crime scene.

→ LE received a DNA sample from Carbo on 29 July 2020 and sent it to the BCA laboratory for testing.
Carbo’s DNA profile was consistent with the DNA profile.

Nothing about a motive!

Carbo next court date is 6 August 2020.

BCA agents and Chisholm police investigators arrested Carbo after receiving confirmation from the BCA laboratory earlier today that Carbo’s DNA matched DNA from the crime scene.

Nancy Daugherty was last seen alive just after Midnight on July 16, 1986. That afternoon, Chisholm police officers conducting a welfare check located Nancy Daugherty deceased inside of her home. She had been beaten, sexually assaulted and strangled. Evidence at the scene indicated that a struggle had occurred both outside and inside the home. Witnesses later reported hearing a woman screaming in the early morning hours.

BCA scientists obtained a full DNA suspect profile from bodily fluids found on the victim and at the scene. But the DNA did not match any persons in the criminal DNA database.

Over the years investigators interviewed and collected DNA from more than 100 people. Periodic case reviews also happened over the years, but none led to a solid lead in the case, and periodic comparisons of evidence DNA to the DNA database did not result in a match.

In early 2020, the Chisholm Police Department approached the BCA wanting to provide a sample of the DNA evidence to Parabon. The company analyzes public genealogy databases that have law enforcement programs to generate leads in cases. The BCA laboratory coordinated with the company to provide a DNA sample from the decades-old evidence. Based on their analysis and search, Parabon in July identified Mr. Carbo as a potential suspect in the case.

BCA agents and Chisholm investigators began surveillance of Mr. Carbo last week and surreptitiously obtained DNA evidence that was sent to the BCA laboratory for analysis. On Monday, the BCA laboratory reported a DNA match to the bodily fluids found on the victim and at the scene. This morning, investigators obtained a DNA sample directly from Mr. Carbo with his consent. The BCA laboratory tested the known DNA sample, providing confirmation this afternoon of a DNA match.

“We are gratified to be able to provide some answers to this family and this community after all of these years,” Chisholm Police Chief Vern Manner said. “We are grateful as well to the BCA and so many assisting law enforcement agencies that continued to work this case over more than three decades.”

“This case illustrates why no case is ever cold for us,” BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said. “Every time we hit a dead end, investigators and scientists go back to the drawing board. Solving this case is proof of the value of tenacious work – even when it’s over a span of decades.”

Mr. Carbo will be charged in the days ahead by the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office. This remains an ongoing and active investigation.

On Saturday, July 25th, 2009 at approximately 2:00 a.m., Paul Fisher was murdered as he approached the parking lot entrance to his apartment building at 5301 Chicago Avenue South, in Minneapolis. Policed have been frustrated by the lack of leads about how this crime could happen to Paul on the step of his home.

Information about a possible vehicle in the area, sounds that may have been heard, people that may have been seen, is needed. If you have heard somebody talk about or boast about this crime you can share that information and remain anonymous and earn a reward of up to $1,000.

Cold Case: Paul Fisher
By Caroline Lowe, WCCO-TV May 14, 2010 at 3:58 pm

(WCCO) — It’s been almost 10 months since Paul Fisher’s girlfriend found him gunned down in a stairwell at their apartment building at 53rd Street and Chicago Avenue in south Minneapolis.

Police say they believe robbery may have been the motive for murder on July 25. They hope someone will contact them to help solve the killing.

The girlfriend, Andrea Hintz, and his family have set up a website to share their story and to solicit donations for a reward fund to get information to lead investigators to his killer. So far, the reward is at $10,000.

Anyone with information on who fatally shot Paul Fisher should call Minneapolis Homicide Sgt. Chris Thomsen at 612-673-3577 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

——-

Shooting Victim Found In Stairwell Identified

A man found dead in a Minneapolis stairwell Saturday morning has been identified. The shooting has prompted police to begin investigation on the city’s 8th homicide of the year.

Just after 2:00 a.m. on Saturday neighbors heard gunshots at an apartment complex on the 5300 block of Chicago Avenue South. They said the gunshots took the life of 27-year-old Paul Fisher.

“They asked if we heard anything? I said it sounded like firecrackers,” said Tamarra Sweats, who lives in the building.

Bullet holes in the wall near the back stairwell of the building mark the spot where the crime was committed. Neighbors think Fisher was just getting home when he was shot.

They said he died in the third-floor stairwell near the apartment where he lived with his girlfriend, who found him and called police.

“He was a nice person. It’s awful to see him go. He had a girlfriend too and I feel sorry for her now too,” said Sweats.

Police have some leads but have not made any arrests. Until they do neighbors said they will be on the look-out.

“It is kind of creepy. Bullets fly through walls so it’s not a good thing to have going on around here,” said neighbor Camille Norman.

Neighbors said up until recently Fisher was the caretaker of the building.

As part of the leads they are following, the police may be looking for a gold SUV with rims in connection with this shooting.

Family, Friends Continue To Search For Paul Fisher’s Killer
WCCO | July 25, 2011 at 1:02 pm

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It has been two years since Paul Fisher was shot and killed inside his apartment building in Minneapolis.

Family Video

The case has gone cold, but now Fisher’s mom is hitting the streets of Minneapolis with a renewed push for justice.

Patti Swedberg, thinks there maybe someone in the community near 53rd St. and Chicago Ave. who knows who’s responsible for shooting her son.

It was July 25, 2009 when Fisher’s body was found by his girlfriend in the stairwell of his apartment building.

On Monday, his family and friends went around the neighborhood and posted flyers about a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Swedberg and Fisher’s former girlfriend, Andrea Hintz, made it their mission to go out in the community because they don’t want people to forget what happened to Fisher. They said they are determined to bring his killer to justice.

“It’s been two years and we have nothing still,” said Hintz, “and we have to do this again.”

“It’s gets harder every day because there is no answer,” said Swedberg. “I just miss him so much. Everything that we see, everything that we hear, just everyday life — you think he should be here.”

Fisher was 27 years old when he died. He was about to start his own painting business and he and Hintz had plans to get married.

Fisher’s family thinks that it was a random crime and that he may have walked into a robbery or burglary. Police have never been able to confirm the motive.

His family raised a lot of the $10,000 Crime Stoppers’ reward on their own. They urge anyone to call 1-800-222-TIPS if they have information about the case.

Jonathan O’Shaughnessy was just 24-year-year when he was murdered! As he walked home from a dance with family members on 3 July 2017 at around 11:15 pm, a minivan drove past near the corner of Fourth Avenue South and East 64th Street made a U-turn, and pulled curbside. The door slid open.

The driver called out, “We’re going to kill you!” Shots popped off. Jonathan collapsed. The van took off.

If you have any information please call the Richfield Police Department at (612)861-9898

Family of Richfield drive-by shooting victim waits for answers
Published September 17, 2017 |Fox9

RICHFIELD, Minn. (KMSP) – The drive-by shooting in Richfield, Minnesota that claimed Jonathan O’Shaughnessy’s life still rattles those he left behind.

His family says the 24-year-old had no known enemies. More than two months later, there are still no arrests in the case.

“He was family loving, never had a beef with anyone, he was just a good guy,” said Brian O’Shaughnessy, Jonathan’s father.

On July 3, Jonathan was walking home from an annual dance he attended every year with his family near 64th Street when he was shot to death. Richfield police and family say it appears Jonathan was targeted in a random act of violence.

“A van pulled up, the door slid open, and someone yelled ‘We’re going to kill you’ or ‘I’m going to kill you’ and they shot him, in front of his family, dead. Unbelievable,” said Brian. “He was on a date with his family to a street dance that he’d been to his whole life, in his own neighborhood.”

The neighborhood is where Jonathan was the most comfortable, according to his relatives. Sunday, his family hosted a celebration of life gathering at the Minneapolis/Richfield American Legion Post 435. More than 500 people attended to honor a young life cut short.

“All the pictures we have of him are him with a huge grin on his face because that’s who he was,” said Kortney Nordrum, Jonathan’s sister. “You’re not even who you are as an adult yet. He was becoming this awesome man who really cared for his family and cared for his friends.”

The ambiance was replete with live music, family, food and friends. Cindy O’Shaughnessy, Jonathan’s aunt, told Fox 9 the celebration allows her nephew to be remembered for who he was not how he left the world.

“He’d take his mom to breakfast every week and then he’d pay it forward,” she said. “They’d pick who they were going to pay the bill for. Everybody was always excited if he was going to be there, so, it seemed particularly tragic that such a random thing could happen to him. It just makes it feel like it could happen to anyone that you care for.”

During the event, the family sold Justice for Jonathan t-shirts and collected donations to supplement the nearly $15,000 the family and Crime Stoppers are offering for legitimate information leading to an arrest and conviction.

“Maybe if the award is higher it might get someone’s attention,” said Cindy.

The family also plans to use remaining funds to launch a memorial scholarship fund in Jonathan’s honor. The scholarship, they say, would help students who want to attend Jonathan’s alma mater, Academy of Holy Angels, or other Richfield private schools, but need help with tuition.

“We’d like answers and we’d like to see the people responsible for this come to justice but we also don’t want that to overshadow who he was as a person,” said Nordrum.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call the Richfield Police Department at (612)861-9898 or Crime Stoppers of Minnesota online or at 1-800-222-8477.

Hope for peace

Christmas is the time of year when people wish others well and remember all our loved ones we hold dear to us.

Our brother, Wally Morgan Thompson, went missing Nov. 1, 2005, and was found murdered in McGregor March 2006.

My hope for this year is to find the answers to who and why Wally was murdered. I hope that if anyone knows, that they will do the right thing so that maybe Wally’s family can find some peace. I think of my brother every day. It does not matter if it’s been two years or 10 years, he is still on my mind and always will be.

This year, my only daughter named her firstborn child Andrew Morgan in honor and remembrance of Wally because he meant so much to all of us. Wally may not be here with us but his name will live on through love of family.

Wally was a beautiful person. We love and miss him every day and always will. Every time I experience kindness from others, I think of Wally because he was so kind. Family was everything to Wally.

I could not let the Christmas season pass without writing about Wally and asking anyone who knows what happened to him to do the right thing and maybe give back some peace to our lives. I know my brother would want this for his family and the ones he loved.

I appreciate everything that everyone has already done for our family and I will continue to search for the answers. My brother deserves at least that much from all of us.

If you have any information, please contact the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Department at 927-7435.

Terrence Brisk, 41, of Little Falls, was found shot to death November 7, 2016, while hunting alone on his parents’ property in Belle Prairie Township. At first considered a possible hunting accident, Brisk’s death was ruled a homicide. Investigators later revealed he was killed with his own gun, a Winchester Model 30-30 lever action rifle. The rifle was missing initially, and was later located by investigators. No information on where the rifle was found has been released.

Possible New Evidence in Unsolved Morrison County Homicide

Terrance Brisk was found shot to death last November on his parents’ property just outside Little Falls in Morrison County.

Investigators went back to the crime scene Monday and focused on a 10-acre area where the 41-year-old Brisk was found dead after telling family members he was deer hunting on a warm day during the gun hunting season.

In that area, they discovered a few items the Morrison County Sheriff said are now on their way to the state crime lab for further analysis.

“We will not give up until the killer is caught,” said Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen. “And we are hopeful the items we recovered Monday will be useful evidence leading us where we need to be, and that’s on the killer’s front door step.”

Larsen said investigators are still looking for Brisk’s hunting rifle, a Winchester 30-30, which they consider a key piece of evidence.

“If anyone comes across the rifle, we would love to hear from them because it could hold more clues as to what happened the day Mr. Brisk was killed and why,” Larsen said.

Brisk’s older brother, Jay, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the family is confident someone will come forward with information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the person, or people, responsible for Brisk’s death.

“Why wouldn’t they?” Jay Brisk said.

“There are four kids at home without a father,” he said. “My kids, they miss their uncle and I sure miss him, too. And my mom and dad are going crazy. It is about killing them.

“The biggest question is why someone would want to do this to Terry, because he did not have a mean bone in his body and he had no enemies at all.”

Anyone with information regarding the death of Terrence Brisk is asked to contact the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators Find ‘Items Of Interest’ Connected To Death Of Terry Brisk
Lakeland PBS Mal Meyer — Apr. 18 2017

During a search of the property of a Little Falls man, who was found shot and killed in November, law enforcement officials found a “couple items of interest.” The items could shed light on the death of Terrence “Terry” Brisk, who was found dead in what originally believed to be a hunting incident, but was later ruled a homicide.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Department and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension found the items on Monday, on the corner of Hawthorn and Jewel Road in Belle Prairie Township, 10 miles east of Little Falls.

According to a preliminary autopsy, Brisk died of blood loss due to a gunshot wound on November 7th, 2016. Investigators initially believe that someone might not have realized they had hit the hunter on his wooded property.

However, a month after his death, the department announced the case was then considered a homicide investigation because a gun was believed to have been stolen during the incident. The Winchester Model AE 30-30 lever action rifle is described as an older model, with a wooden stock and forearm with no sling attached. It has not been recovered.

Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen said in a press release that investigators are in the process of submitting the new evidence to the BCA for analysis. Because of the ongoing active investigation, no details will be released concerning the items that were recovered on the property.

Sheriff Larsen states that there is still a $30,000 reward for information that leads to the identification of the person who shot and killed Terrance Brisk.

Larsen states that their office is one step closer to solving this crime and that they are committed to working this case until a suspect is in custody.

If you have any information regarding this case you can report it and stay anonymous by either contacting the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office at (320) 632-9233 or by contacting Crime Stoppers of Minnesota. Crime Stoppers can be contacted at their website www.CrimeStoppersMn.org or by calling the toll-free number 1-800- 222-TIPS [8477] from anywhere in Minnesota; by installing the Submit a Tip APP on any Smartphone; or by sending a text message beginning with TIP674 to CRIMES [274637].

When 3 year old Terrell Mayes heard gunshots near his home in the 2600 block of Colfax Av. N. the day after Christmas, he did exactly what his mother had told him to do. He started to run up the stairs in an effort to hide in his bathtub for protection. Terrell only made it halfway up the stairs. His brother, at home at the time, would later tell police “why would somebody shoot my brother? He’s only a baby.”

Since the time of his murder, investigators have interviewed dozens and dozens of people and yet the person who took this 3 year old’s life has never been found. In the beginning, there were a ton of tips on this case but lately there hasn’t been much. Investigators spent time tracking down leads in the prisons that haven’t panned out.

If you have any information about who fired the stray bullet that pierced his home in the 2600 block of Colfax Av. N. on 26 December 2011, please contact investigators. They need information. They need your help.

Terrell’s mother needs to know why this happened.

If you have any information you might have with investigators by calling the MPD Tip Line at 612-692-TIPS (8477). You can also submit a tip through Crimestoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or texting “Tip747 plus your tip” to 274637.

Mpls. police seek help finding killer of 3-year-old Terrell Mayes
Mother of 3-year-old slain in 2011 seeks answers in his death
By STEVE BRANDT Star Tribune | DECEMBER 21, 2015 — 11:35PM

Minneapolis police Monday appealed for anyone with knowledge that could solve the killing of 3-year-old Terrell Mayes to contact them, saying they’re confident someone has the information they need to solve the case.

Police and the boy’s mother, Marsha Mayes, said they’re reminded daily of the murder four years ago Saturday.

“It is one of those cases that the people behind me take personally,” Police Chief Janeé Harteau said at a news conference, her voice trembling slightly. “I keep Terrell’s picture on my desk to remind me.”

The case is being handled by a Cold Case Squad whose formation was announced by the department in September. Four investigators are assigned to the Mayes killing, the department said. There is a $60,000 reward for the person whose information solves the case. It is the sixth older case to be publicized on the department’s website, www.insidempd.com.

Mayes was killed the day after Christmas in 2011 by a stray bullet that hit him as gunfire erupted nearby. He was struck while running up the stairway of his house on the 2600 block of Colfax Avenue N.

His mother said she thinks multiple people know what happened that day. But she attributed their failure to come forward to shame. “Who wants to tell me to my face that they killed my child?” she said.

She also said she feels a lack of support from the activists who have been marching since the death last month of 24-year-old Jamar Clark. He was shot by police during an altercation at an ambulance on Plymouth Avenue N., sparking protests over whether the shooting was justified.

“I have a little resentment and bitterness and anger for my community,” she said, noting the absence of community pressure for the killer to come forward. “I see people marching for other stuff.”

“Colfax knows what happened. Dupont knows what happened,” she said, citing two blocks adjacent to the house were Terrell was shot. Mayes has since moved away from the block with her two older and two younger sons.

Asked if police think the shot originated on the block or farther away, Lt. Richard Zimmerman said the shooting was gang-related and, “It was near the house.”

“We need somebody in the community to come forward with that one piece of information that we need,” Commander Catherine Johnson said. “That’s what’s going to give our investigators the information they need.”

The Cold Case Squad was established to review dozens of unsolved murders in concert with representatives of the Hennepin County attorney’s office and the FBI, with whom detectives assigned to the squad meet monthly. They review what cases deserve a fresh look with more resources.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) — After 20 years, there is still no justice for a family in St. Paul. Earl Lorenzo Farley was an only son and father to four boys.

The 28-year-old was killed in a hit-and-run along University Avenue West this month two decades ago. Police still have not made any arrests.

Farley was killed across from a recording arts high school on Oct. 7, 1999. It’s where his only sister now works, and 20 years later it’s become a place for his family and friends to gather and remember — but not in a typical way to grieve.

“We don’t really like to dwell on stuff. We just like to have fun,” said Earl’s son, Tamon Farley.

“He was a positive person,” said Earl’s other son, Earl Farley Jr. “He was always joking. That’s probably where I get it from.”

Tamon and Earl Jr. Farley are now in their 20s, but were only one and six years old when their dad was killed in a hit and run. Police say Earl was leaving the now-closed Arnellia’s Bar when he was hit by an SUV.

“[It] feels like yesterday to me,” said Earl’s mother, Earnestine Farley-Wingo. She said he was killed just six days before his 29th birthday.

“That was the worst week for me in 1999,” she said.

To mark 20 years without Earl, his only sister lead the group in a balloon release near the crime scene.

“To my brother: I love you so much. You have taught me so much,” his sister said.

No arrests leaves a lot questions — and after 20 years of wondering the family isn’t sure they want answers.

“At first, I said, ‘I wish somebody could be caught and we could go to trial and stuff.’ But it’s been 20 years,” Farley-Wingo said. “If I had to go through that today, I don’t know if I could live through it.”

Instead, this family is focusing on what they do have.

“Each one of his sons has a piece of him that I see,” Farley-Wingo said.

Anyone with further information about this case is asked to call the St. Paul Police Department at 651-291-1111.

On June 18th, 2008 Joseph Sodd III was murdered near the intersection of 19th Avenue South and 7th Street South, near the Cedar Riverside neighborhood in Minneapolis. He was home from college for the summer and his family and friends are asking for your help. The motive for this murder is unclear at this time. Homicide investigators have put in hundreds of hours on this case and have developed many leads.
Sodd died in the early morning hours from a sharp force injury.

Investigators believe there are still members of the community that have information about this case.

By Roxanne Bergeron | June 19, 2008

Around 2 a.m. the morning of Wednesday, June 18, a man was found stabbed and unconscious near the intersection of South Seventh Street and 19th Avenue South, near Augsburg College in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. He died shortly thereafter at Hennepin County Medical Center.

The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Joseph Sodd, III, an alumnus of Perpich Center for Arts Education. He was a dancer and a student at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. No arrests have been made at this time. The Minneapolis Police Department Homicide Unit is investigating the crime.

The day before Sodd’s murder, a crime alert was issued for several neighborhoods on the East Bank near the University of Minnesota. Como, Marcy Holmes, Prospect Park and the University of Minnesota neighborhoods are involved in the alert. Three robberies of person have occurred since June 1, all involving female victims and black male suspects.

A personal safety workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Eastside Neighborhood Services, 1700 Second Street NE, Minneapolis. Call Second Precinct Crime Prevention Specialist Carol Oosterhuis at 612-673-2874 to register.

The crime alert advises the following:
Avoid carrying a purse or bag with valuables (large amounts of cash, checkbook, credit cards, etc). If you carry cash, carry a small amount in your front pocket or wear a waist pack that can be covered by a shirt or jacket. Do not resist if a robber wants your handbag. Being pulled down by the shoulder strap of your bag or purse can cause injuries.

Victims of robberies can be any age and race and can be men or women. Take the following precautions:

Try to walk with another person. If you are walking in or near the University of Minnesota, you can contact 624-WALK for the University escort service.

Carry as little cash as possible. Carry your keys and money in a pocket, not in a purse or wallet.

Be observant and aware of your surroundings. Avoid being absorbed in telephone conversations or music.

Avoid alleys or poorly lit areas.

If you feel uneasy, go directly to a place where there are other people.

If you are walking at night, choose well-lighted streets.

If a robber approaches you, do not resist. Try to get a good description of the robber, as well as vehicle description and license plate number. Call 911 immediately.

I knew him as “Booshi”. In the early morning of June 18, 2008 “Booshi” or Joseph Sodd III was violently murdered in the Cedar-Riverside area of Minneapolis.

His Mom and Dad, Liz and Joe, are old friends of mine. And Booshi was their first-born. Joe and Liz were one of the first of my friends to have a child, so this boy was something special to us. Over the years I moved out of town and lost touch with Joe and Liz, Booshi and their second child, Alden. But in 2004, there was a reunion of sorts and I was reacquainted with Joe and Liz. They could not stop talking about the now-high school student, Booshi and what a fantastic performer he was becoming. He was a dancer! Imagine that. Where did that gene come from? And how refreshing to encounter parents who actually relished the fact that their son was an artist. They loved that boy. And oh, were they proud of him.

No one should lose a child to such violence. His case remains unsolved. A reward has recently been offered. Someone out there must know something about this crime. Please do the right thing for this extraordinary young man and his family. Call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or the Minneapolis police at 1-800-692-TIPS

Apartment staff went into the upstairs apartment, saw a significant amount of blood and then located Childs’ body inside a running shower. She had been stabbed more than two dozen times, some of the wounds coming after she was already dead.

Jerry Weston was arrested after his DNA found on a napkin when he was at a hockey game. He used a napkin then threw it away, and they got enough DNA off of the napkin. Investigators used a genealogy website to match the DNA.

Westrom was taken into custody and a more complete DNA sample was taken. That sample was matched with a number of samples taken from Childs’ apartment, including DNA left on a washcloth, a sperm cell left on a comforter, and others. Prosecutors say more than 99 percent of the population can be excluded as being suspects in Childs’ death.

Weston claims he doesn’t know Childs but his supposed DNA was in her apartment after the murder. It has been said that Weston was in the Minneapolis area in the 1990’s as he had been arrested in connection to other pro-stitutes.

I’ll update this story as soon as more info is released!
