On 5 September 2011 a seven pound baby girl was found near Homer, wrapped in a green T-shirt and inside a canvas tote bag. She was found with angel figurines.

Baby Angel complaint:
On or about September 5, 2011, at approximately 2:22 pm, Winona County Sheriffs Deputies (collectively “Deputies”) responded to a call concerning a deceased newborn that was found floating in the Mississippi River. The infant was found inside a bag floating on the Minnesota side of the river within the border of Winona County, Minnesota, approximately seven miles south of the City of Winona. The bag containing the infant was found floating in the water by boaters. The inside of the bag also contained a pendant, incense, and several angel figurines.

On September 6, 2011, an autopsy was conducted on the infant. The medical examiner determined the infant appeared to be full-term and was likely a recent birth within a day or two. The infant had a four-inch section of the umbilical cord attached that appeared to have been cut with a sharp-edged instrument. It did not appear the umbilical cord was cut by a medical provider which indicated the infant did not receive medical treatment during or after birth. The medical examiner noted several fractures on the front and side of the infant’s skull.

There was bleeding on the brain. There was no evidence of medical intervention on the infant. A 2024 updated autopsy review concluded this “normally developed term female infant sustained injuries of the head while alive.”

The evidence shows the skull fractures were sustained while the infant was alive. This is not the type of injury that would have occurred with the assistance of a medical professional during delivery. The incidents of skull fractures during a medically assisted delivery are very low and generally occur in only 2.9% of cases where forceps were used during the birthing process. There is no evidence that medical care was provided during or immediately after delivery. The resultant brain hemorrhages from the skull fractures could have been treated medically and decreased the likelihood of death.

The funeral for Baby Angel was 5 April 2012.

Jennifer Nichole Baechle, 43, is facing two counts of second-degree manslaughter for allegedly placing her newborn in a white tote bag and sending it down the Mississippi River in 2011.

➡️ 24 April 2025 court hearing: Baechle’s unconditional bail was set at $200,000 with her conditional bail set at $20,000 provided that she doesn’t leave the state and is monitored via a GPS. The next court hearing is scheduled for 7 July 2025.

Jennifer Baechle complaint:
On or about May 24, 2023, Deputies requested Defendant provide a voluntary DNA sample. Defendant requested time to think about giving a sample and said she would get back in touch with Deputies. On June 1, 2023, Defendant requested additional time to research the company Deputies were using for genealogy analysis. Deputies then received a letter from a criminal defense lawyer requesting any future contact with Defendant be made through counsel.

Deputies conducted a trash pull search of Defendant’s trash. Deputies collected the trash that was set outside for pickup by the trash collection company. A search of the trash bags revealed information connected to Defendant’s household. Deputies also located a discarded female hygiene product. These items were sent to the BCA laboratory for testing and comparison to the DNA of the infant. The BCA’s report on the DNA testing and comparison confirmed that the infant, found in the bag floating in the Mississippi River on September 5, 2011, could be the biological child of Defendant.

On or about March 19, 2024, Deputies served a search warrant on Defendant to collect DNA. Defendant’s DNA was submitted to the BCA laboratory for testing. The DNA test results indicated the genetic results obtained from the unidentified female infant are 570,000 times more likely to occur in a biological child of Defendant than in someone unrelated to Defendant. The report concluded that this was very strong evidence to support the biological relationship between Defendant and the unidentified female infant as being a biological mother daughter relationship. As the biological mother of the infant, Defendant had a duty to seek medical care on behalf of the infant during pregnancy, birth, and immediately after birth.

Deputies spoke with members of Defendant’s family. The family told Deputies they had not had personal contact with Defendant during 2011. They said Defendant was living in her van in the Winona, Minnesota, area in 2011. Deputies showed Defendant’s family members photographs of the items found with the infant in the bag. Family members immediately recognized the blue pendant as belonging to Defendant. Deputies were also told that Defendant collected angels. They described giving an angel ornament to Defendant every Christmas.

Friday, October 11, 2024

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A federal jury found Derrick John Thompson guilty of illegal possession of a firearm and fentanyl following a deadly vehicle crash that killed five victims, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

Following a five-day trial in U.S. District Court before Judge Jeffrey M. Bryan, Thompson, 28, was found guilty of one count of possessing with intent to distribute fentanyl, one count of possessing a firearm as a felon, and one count of carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.

Thompson has not been to trial for the Murders of these ladies:

According to evidence presented at trial, on June 16, 2023, a trooper with the Minnesota State Patrol observed a black Cadillac Escalade speeding north on I-35W, traveling at 95 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour speed zone. The trooper observed the driver, later identified as Thompson, abruptly cut across four lanes of traffic to exit the freeway at the Lake Street exit. The trooper began following the SUV but did not activate the emergency lights or sirens because the trooper did not want to attempt a traffic stop on city streets given the Escalade’s dangerous driving. At the intersection of 2nd Avenue South and East Lake Street, Thompson sped through a red light at the intersection without stopping or slowing. The SUV struck at full speed the driver’s side of a Honda Civic that was traveling lawfully through the intersection. All five occupants of the Honda Civic, four adult females and one juvenile female, were killed. When law enforcement responded to the scene of the crash, witnesses told officers where Thompson fled. Officers found Thompson, wearing clothing that matched the description given by witnesses, sitting on the curb outside of a nearby restaurant. Officers detained Thompson, who was later transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for evaluation.

According to evidence presented at trial, an officer found at the scene a Hertz rental record for the Cadillac Escalade indicating that Thompson rented the vehicle from a Hertz located at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport approximately 30 minutes before the crash. After obtaining a warrant to search the vehicle, officers found a black leather bag on the front passenger side floor that contained a loaded Glock pistol with an extended magazine, as well as three baggies containing more than 2,000 blue “M-Box 30” fentanyl pills, a baggie containing an additional 14 grams of fentanyl powder, a baggie containing 35 grams of cocaine, and a digital scale. Subsequent testing determined that Thompson’s DNA was present on the firearm, the fentanyl powder, and the cocaine. A search of Thompson’s phone found dozens of texts indicating fentanyl deals.

Because Thompson has multiple prior felony convictions, he is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.

This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI, the Minneapolis Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Minneapolis–St. Paul Airport Police Department, in coordination with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas Calhoun-Lopez and Ruth S. Shnider tried the case.

Undercover operation results in 11 arrests and recovery of four trafficking victims

From the MN BCA website:
ST. PAUL — Eleven people are facing felony charges following their arrests for attempting to solicit minors for sex or for promoting prostitution.

Investigators with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA)-led Human Trafficking Investigators Task Force and the St. Paul Police Department conducted an operation July 27-28 in St. Paul. During the operation, suspects chatted online with undercover agents and investigators who posed as minors or as sex buyers. Investigators arrested the suspects as they arrived at an arranged meeting place for an encounter.

Suspects were booked into the Ramsey County Jail. A list of arrestees is available here. Charges are expected in the coming days.

• Ten people were booked on probable cause felony solicitation of a minor under 18 years of age for prostitution:

“We are committed to helping Minnesota’s trafficking victims escape the reprehensible actions of those who would buy or sell them for sex,” BCA Superintendent Drew Evans said. “Our predatory crimes agents will continue to work with our law enforcement partners and advocates to end this terrible crime in Minnesota.”

“Good police work doesn’t happen without law enforcement coming together, and because of that partnership these individuals can no longer do harm,” Saint Paul Police Chief Axel Henry said.

Many additional agencies lent resources to this enforcement effort including the East Metro Sex Trafficking Task Force (EMSTTF), Tribes United Against Sex Trafficking (TRUST) and the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office.
I’m sure you’ve heard about the police chase in Robbinsdale on Saturday night, 8 July 2023. NOTE: The officer called off the pursuit when Hudson became very reckless.

Here’s what’s been said:

A Robbindale police officer was doing routine patrols around 8:15 p.m. on 42nd Avenue when he saw a white Tesla drive past at nearly twice the speed limit.

Robbinsdale Police Captain John Elder

“The vehicle was occupied by one male wearing a ninja-style face mask,” Elder said.

The officer began to follow the vehicle along side streets.

“This in our minds certainly appeared to be that this person was attempting to elude the officer,” Elder said.

The suspect vehicle ducked down an alley near Orchard and Perry avenues. The officer attempted to intercept the vehicle at the end of the alley and the suspect drove onto Orchard, police said.

As the officer turned on his lights and sirens, the suspect fled rapidly down Orchard Avenue.

“The officer estimated the speed of the suspect vehicle as it was pulling away from him to be between 70 and 90 miles an hour,” Elder said.

When the officer tried to catch up and make a traffic stop, the Tesla sped away through side streets.

The officer ended the chase, but the Tesla continue to speed, going up to 90 mph before crashing into the minivan

The suspect later crashed into a minivan at 36th Avenue.

“He didn’t even appear to hit his breaks,” Elder said.

The victim, Emily Gerding was deceased at the scene. John Gerding is hospitalized in critical condition with significant injuries. He’s in a medically-induced coma.

“John and Emily (née Darmer) worked as special education teachers at a local middle school.” GoFundMe “They were about to celebrate their 7th wedding anniversary in August. Emily would have celebrated her 35th birthday later this month. She was busy planning the party for [their daughter’s] upcoming 3rd birthday this month as well.”

Quintin Leon Hudson, 20 is currently in the Hennepin county jail awaiting charges. He was arrested at the scene and take to the hospital and released to the jail 11 July 2023. Hudson was unlicensed with an instruction permit only & under suspicion of being under the influence.

Trinity Ottoson-Smith, 9 was shot on 15 May 2021 in the head while playing on a trampoline at a friend’s birthday party in north Minneapolis. She was taken to North Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The shooter was in a red 4-door Ford vehicle. She died 27 May 2021.

Dpree Robinson, 19, was charged with a single count of intentional second-degree murder for the shooting that killed the Trinity in North Minneapolis in mid-May 2021. Robinson was arrested on 23 February 2022.

Robinson 20, plead guilty in court to second-degree murder. He was charged with first-degree murder.

Dpree Shareef Robinson sentenced to 450 months for murder of 9-year-old jumping on trampoline

Hennepin county DA

Dpree Shareef Robinson was sentenced today to 450 months [37.5 years] in prison for the intentional shooting death of Trinity Ottoson-Smith, a 9-year-old who had been jumping on a trampoline with friends. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty released the following statement:

“No family should be forced to endure all that Trinity’s family has these past two years. After losing Trinity in a devastating, senseless act of gun violence, they have faced multiple delays getting legal closure on the criminal case against the person responsible for this tragedy. I hope today’s sentencing helps them move forward focused on the positive memories they have of her too-short life.

“Trinity’s murder was no accident. Mr. Robinson was intent on killing that sunny, spring day and that is what he did. We cannot allow the killing to continue, we all must do more to end the violence. Our office will continue to prioritize the prosecution of violent crime but simply waiting for more victims and prosecuting criminal cases is not enough. We are also committed to working with the community and at all levels to help get guns off the street and protect those not yet harmed.”

Thursday, June 22, 2023

MINNEAPOLIS – Derrick John Thompson has been charged in a federal criminal complaint with illegal possession of fentanyl and a firearm following a deadly vehicle crash that killed five victims, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

According to court documents, on June 16, 2023, a trooper with the Minnesota State Patrol observed a black Cadillac SUV speeding north on I-35W, traveling at 95 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour speed zone. The trooper began following the SUV but did not initiate the emergency lights or attempt to make a traffic stop because the trooper did not want to cause the driver, later identified as Thompson, 27, to continue to drive recklessly on city streets. The trooper observed Thompson abruptly cut across four lanes of traffic to exit the freeway at the Lake Street exit. When law enforcement responded to the scene of the crash, witnesses told officers that Thompson had fled on foot through a nearby alley. Officers found Thompson sitting on the curb outside of a nearby restaurant. Officers detained Thompson, who was later transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for evaluation.

According to court documents, an officer found at the scene a Hertz rental record for the Cadillac SUV indicating that Thompson rented the vehicle from a Hertz located at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport approximately 30 minutes before the crash. After obtaining a warrant to search the SUV, officers found a black leather bag on the front passenger side floor that contained a loaded Glock pistol with an extended magazine, as well as three baggies containing 2,169 blue “M-Box 30” fentanyl pills, a baggie containing an additional 14 grams of powder fentanyl, a baggie containing 13 MDMA pills, a baggie containing 35 grams of cocaine, and a digital scale.

Because Thompson has a prior felony conviction, he is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.

The complaint charges Thompson with possession of a firearm as a felon, possession of fentanyl, and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. If convicted of the charges, Thompson faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in federal prison. Thompson, who is currently in state custody in Hennepin County, will make his initial appearance in U.S. District Court at a later date.

This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI, the Minneapolis Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Minneapolis–St. Paul Airport Police Department, in close coordination with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas Calhoun-Lopez and Ruth S. Shnider are prosecuting the case.

A complaint is merely an allegation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Hennepin County Attorney’s Office announces charges against Derrick John Thompson

Hennepin County Attorney, U.S. Attorney coordinate on additional drug, gun charges

Court: 06/23/2023 01:30 PM
First Appearance
Judicial Officer: Lamas, Carolina A.
Location: PSF 141

Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty today announced that Derrick John Thompson, 27, of Brooklyn Park, has been charged in Hennepin County District Court with 10 counts of criminal vehicular homicide after Thompson’s grossly negligent and criminally reckless driving conduct led to a crash on June 16 that killed five young women. Moriarty added that the office will seek a separate sentence for each victim if Thompson is convicted. While these charges have been filed, additional evidence is still being processed, including Thompson’s blood toxicology and DNA testing.

Law enforcement responding to the scene of the crash also recovered a Glock 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine, along with significant quantities of fentanyl from Thompson’s vehicle. As the County Attorney’s Office began its review of the evidence in this case, Moriarty engaged in discussions with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI about possible federal charges related to the firearm and narcotics.

“The deaths of these five young women is devastating for their loved ones and has shaken our community,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said. “We value each of these young women’s lives and plan to seek a separate sentence for each life lost. I firmly believe in the potential for redemption and second chances, but Mr. Thompson has repeatedly engaged in extraordinarily dangerous criminal driving conduct related to apparent large-scale drug dealing. He has caused immeasurable pain and suffering in multiple states and we will seek a significant sentence that appropriately reflects the devastation he has caused and ensures a lengthy period of incapacitation.”

“When you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you control a dangerous weapon capable of inflicting horrific destruction. Every driver must recognize that fact. We cannot tolerate this level of recklessness on our roads, especially when it comes with the dangerous combination of guns and drugs.”

According to the criminal complaint filed by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office:

On or about June 16, 2023, at approximately 10:09 p.m., a Minnesota State Trooper was stationed in a fully marked Minnesota State Patrol squad vehicle at the bus stop on I-35W North at 46th Street in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, when the Trooper observed a black Cadillac Escalade SUV traveling northbound on I-35W drive by the Trooper at a high rate of speed. The radar on the Trooper’s squad vehicle indicated the black Cadillac Escalade was traveling 95 mph in a 55-mph zone. The black Cadillac Escalade was also weaving in and out of traffic lanes in a reckless manner. The Trooper attempted to catch up to the black Cadillac Escalade. However, prior to the Trooper catching up to the black Cadillac Escalade and attempting to initiate a traffic stop, the black Cadillac Escalade, which was traveling in the far-left lane, abruptly cut across all four lanes of traffic and exited I-35 at the Lake Street exit ramp at a high rate of speed. The Trooper never activated their emergency lights or sirens.

The black Cadillac Escalade continued to travel at a high rate of speed northbound down the exit ramp and through the 2nd Avenue and East Lake Street intersection. The black Cadillac Escalade did not stop or slow down for the red light at the intersection but proceeded through the intersection at a high rate of speed. At the same time, a black Honda Civic had the green light and was lawfully traveling westbound on East Lake Street through the intersection. The black Cadillac Escalade collided violently with the black Honda Civic and t-boned the black Honda Civic on the driver side of the vehicle in the middle of the intersection causing catastrophic damage to both vehicles. The black Cadillac Escalade crashed into the Black Honda Civic with enough force to crush the black Honda Civic, pushing the black Honda Civic out of the intersection and pinning it against the wall of the I-35W bridge. The crash was caught on video surveillance cameras in the area.

The five occupants of the black Honda Civic were subsequently identified. The driver of black Honda Civic was identified as adult female victim S.G., age 20. The front seat passenger was identified as adult female victim S.O., age 19. The back seat passengers were identified as adult female victims S.A., age 20, and S.H., age 19, and a known juvenile female victim, age 17.

The Trooper observed the crash from approximately 0.15 miles to the south and activated his lights and emergency sirens to respond to the crash. The Trooper immediately went to the black Honda Civic. The Trooper observed that the black Honda Civic had extensive damage and all five victims in the Honda Civic had no signs of life and were deceased. EMS subsequently arrived at the scene and pronounced all five victims deceased.

The black Cadillac Escalade also had significant damage throughout the vehicle. Routine checks revealed the black Cadillac Escalade was a rented vehicle from a Hertz Rental Car located at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International (“MSP”) Airport.

Minneapolis Police Officers and other State Troopers arrived shortly thereafter. Officers located a Hertz rental car receipt on the ground right outside the black Cadillac Escalade. The rental car receipt listed the renter as “Derrick Thompson.” The driver was later fully identified as DERRICK JOHN THOMPSON, the Defendant herein. The receipt indicated that the date and time of the rental was June 16, 2023, at 9:46 p.m., approximately 24 minutes before the crash. Officers were able to confirm that there was video surveillance footage from Hertz of Defendant renting the black Cadillac Escalade from Hertz at the MSP Airport.

Officers spoke to witness A. Witness A informed officers that they observed the accident and saw Defendant exit the vehicle and flee the scene on foot. Witness A provided a detailed physical description of Defendant and the clothing Defendant was wearing. Witness A also informed officers that Defendant was limping as he fled the scene. Witness B informed officers that he observed Defendant flee the scene after the accident and informed officers that Defendant was nearby at Taco Bell.

Defendant was subsequently located near the scene of the crash at Taco Bell. Defendant was sitting on the curb in the parking lot of Taco Bell. Defendant also had injuries consistent with being in a car accident. Defendant was bleeding from a laceration on his forehead, had blood on his hands and clothing, and was sweating profusely. Officers inquired with Defendant about how he sustained his injuries. Defendant initially told officers, “I cut myself. This is old. This is an old cut.” Officers informed Defendant that his injuries looked recent. Defendant then told officers that he was injured when he “fell” earlier in the night. Defendant then provided officers with his photo identification.

Defendant was arrested, and officers observed Defendant was walking with a limp. A show-up was conducted with Witness A. Witness A positively identified Defendant as the driver of the black Cadillac Escalade and the individual they observed flee the scene after the crash. Witness A was “one hundred percent” positive in their identification of Defendant.

Defendant was subsequently transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Medical personnel confirmed Defendant had a broken hip.

On June 20, 2023, a known witness came to the police precinct and provided officers with cell phone video of the crash. In the video, Defendant approaches the witness’s car after the crash and asks the witness to give him a ride.

Officers obtained a search warrant to collect blood from the Defendant. Officers executed the search warrant. The results of the blood draw are still pending.

Officers obtained a search warrant to search the black Cadillac Escalade. During the search of the vehicle, officers discovered a Glock 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine with live ammunition in the magazine. Officers also discovered over 250 grams, including over 2,000 individual pills, of suspected narcotics which field-tested positive for fentanyl, thirteen additional pills which field-tested positive for MDMA, and approximately 35.6 grams of white powder which field-tested positive for cocaine. Police also collected swabs for DNA testing from inside the vehicle. Results of the DNA testing are still pending.

Routine checks also revealed Defendant has the following prior convictions:

Felony evading police causing injury or death, felony hit-and-run resulting in serious bodily injury or death, and felony conspiracy (18-CR-08-676) (2020, California);

Fleeing police in a motor vehicle and false information to police (62-CR-17-7622) on May 7, 2018; and

Fifth Degree Drug Possession (62-CR-15-4853) on October 1, 2015.

Defendant’s driving record includes numerous charges and convictions for driving after suspension and driving after revocation. Defendant’s Minnesota driver’s license was revoked in 2018 after he was convicted for fleeing police in a motor vehicle. Defendant’s license was reinstated in March 2023.

Defendant has been discharged from the hospital and is in custody.

To ensure a fair court process, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will have no further comment while the case is pending unless additional evidence develops that impacts charges.

Seems this kid has been a problem for years. From what I’ve read, Thompson is still in the hospital with police security at the door so he can’t run. HE has been released and in the Hennepin county jail as of 19 June 2023 at 3:30pm. Seems he likes to run. He ran to Minnesota when he was in the accident in California where he put a person in a coma when he hit her while being chased by police. That’s a new post and should be out tomorrow. This post is about his history here in Minnesota.

These are the charges he’s had in Minnesota. He’s not new to the criminal life. He’s a repeat offender. Multiple cases of fleeing police officers. Speeding, guns, drugs hes a real felon with multiple misdemeanors and charges dismissed!
