Barbara Sue Frost murder is an Anoka County unsolved murder. Anoka County has just received a federal grant of $1.15m to work on 38 unsolved homicides dating back to 1965. Barbara Frost is one of them.

Police identify 17-year-old stabbing victim
Star Tribune Tuesday 27 August 1985

The mutilated body of a girl found Saturday in a drainage ditch in East Bethel was identified Monday as that of Barbara Sue Frost, a 17-year-old high school dropout who friends said had alcohol problems.

Anoka County sheriffs Investigators said yesterday that they suspect that the killer is the person who picked Frost up while she was hitchhiking Friday night. That person is still being sought.

Frost had been stabbed at least 20 times in the chest and other upper portions of her body, said Dr. Joseph
coroner. He said that she died of her stab wounds, that there was no sign of a struggle where her body was found and that she had not been sexually abused.

The body appears to have been moved to the drainage ditch after the slaying, Investigators in the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department said. On the basis of the autopsy reports, they estimated that she was killed late Friday night or early Saturday morning [24 August 1985]. The fully clothed body was discovered face down in the ditch at 2:23 p.m. north of County Rd. 22 and east of Hwy. 65 by a farmer who had been mowing tall grass.

We think she was hitchhiking south on Hwy. 65 and that whoever killed her had to know the area pretty well, knew the roads, because there’s not a lot of traffic in that area,” said Capt. Bill Hoogestraat of the Anoka County sheriffs major crimes.

No arrests have been made, but Hoogestraat said investigators were confident of several leads. One of the problems hampering investigators is that the rain Saturday morning left few tire tracks at the scene.

In the last several months Frost had been living intermittently at a house in Blaine with three men who were recovering alcoholics. She attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with them in Fridley.

“She was a ‘runner’ and a troubled young lady who was chemically dependent, but lately she’d been working hard trying to stay sober,” said Ed Nelson, one of the men at the house.

You could see a lot of pain and hurt in that girl’s eyes, he said. “Somebody was saying the other day that they thought one of our best meetings was two weeks ago when she led a discussion group on how people can’t run away from their problems and how she, since she knew she had a long history of running away from problems, had finally learned there were no quick solutions, that you had to ride it out.

“I always thought that was pretty good thought for a person who was 17 years old and in trouble. She was no dummy, that’s for sure.”

Nelson said he last saw her a week ago and described her as “upbeat, real happy.” partly because she mentioned she was going to be getting a new job and would no longer have to earn money as a maid in Downtown Minneapolis.

Frost told Nelson that her father had died about five years ago, he said, and that the death had caused her severe emotional problems. Her mother, Carol Patterson [passed away 2 June 2008] lives in Minneapolis.

Patricia Carlson, one of Frost’s two sisters, said she didn’t know Frost’s whereabouts Friday.

“My sister never deserved this, no-body deserves what happened to her,” Patterson said. She said many of her sister’s problems started after their father’s death.

When he died, I think a part of her died too. They were very close.” For at least the last six months she had been attending the sobriety meetings and was recently working toward getting her general education diploma, said Nelson. Frost dropped out of St. Francis High School in 1982, said a school spokesman.

“Hitchhiking was the main way she got herself around, and despite all our warnings not to do it, she felt it necessary to do it, and she just ran into the wrong, crazy person and that was it,” said Nelson. “We never ran together, we just tried to stay sober together and support each other.”

Police get description of suspect in slaying of girl found in ditch
Star tribune Friday 30 August 1985

Anoka County sheriff’s investigators said Thursday that they have a description of a suspect in last weekend’s slaying of a 17-year-old girl from St. Francis, Minn.

Officials yesterday released a sketch of the suspect drawn from a description received from a gas station attendant, who said he had seen the girl in the gas station with the man the night before her body was found.

The body of Barbara Sue Frost was found in a drainage ditch in East Bethel Saturday afternoon by a farmer who was mowing tall grass. She had been stabbed more than 20 times in the chest and upper body, but had not been sexually assaulted. The murder weapon penetrated her heart several times from the front and the back, officials said.

Authorities are seeking a white man, between 35 and 40 years old, about 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4 with a trim build and short, neat, sandy-colored hair parted on the left. The man also had a noticeable cleft chin, a prominent Adam’s apple and a small bump on the bridge of his nose that might indicate it had once been broken. He was driving a tan, late model Volvo station wagon with Minnesota license plates beginning with the letters NOX or NOZ. He also was wearing a gold watch with diamonds or similar stones on the face. Anoka County Undersheriff Donald Dwyer said that he had sent the license information to the state highway department but that the department had not identified a specific car yesterday afternoon.

Dwyer said investigators received the information from an attendant at a gas station at 45th and Lyndale Ave. N, in Minneapolis. The attendant told authorities that he knew the girl and that he saw her with the man in the gas station about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Dwyer also said that the girl called one of the men with whom she lived in Blaine at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday and that there was party noise in the background. She did not indicate that she was in trouble, investigators said, and the men with whom she shared the house have been cleared as suspects.

Investigators believe the suspect picked up Frost while she was hitchhiking south on Hwy. 65.

Frost was an “inveterate hitchhiker” who also carried a knife because, she said, drivers had tried to take advantage of her, Dwyer said.

Authorities have not found the knife.

Officials ask that people with information on the crime or the suspect call the Anoka County major crime…

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and The Mounds View Police Department are looking for tips in an unsolved homicide.

The victim, 27 year old Toni Lanae [Talarico] Monette, had been working alone as a clerk at the 7-11 store located on Silver Lake Road in Mounds View, MN on March 25, 1981. In the early morning hours, a customer entered the store and discovered the victim’s body. Toni had been violently attacked and stabbed numerous times, resulting in her death. The victim left behind two young children at the time of the homicide.

If you have any information regarding this or other cold cases in Minnesota-please contact the BCA Tip Line or the Mounds View Police Department at the contact information below.

From: The Minneapolis Star 2 April 1981
By DAVE HAGE
The Minneapolis Star

Toni Monette wasn’t scheduled to work the night she was slain. Management at the 7-Eleven store at 7295 Silver Lake Road in Mounds View had hired another cashier, and protocol says the rookie works the 11 pm to 7 am shift. But Monette substituted for the newcomer that night, and wound up on the floor with 10 stab wounds.

Mounds View reacted with dismay this week to its first slaying in years. It occurred early March 25, 1981.
Mounds View Police, aided by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, haven’t arrested anyone or established a motive for the killing of the 26-year-old cashier. Police said no money was taken from the store and there was no sign of sexual assault.

Police checked the store about 2:30 am, the cash register tape indicated a sale at 3:10 am and a customer found Monette dead at 4:30 am. The apparent lack of motive has left neighbors a little nervous.

“I just wonder if there’s this thing wandering around our neighborhood, thinking, ‘Hmmm, I’ll try Mounds View for a while,'” said a woman who lives half a block away on Ramsey County Road H2. “I wasn’t too happy walking home from choir practice at Messiah Lutheran church Wednesday night. I made sure my husband was watching for me.

Two other neighbors said they aren’t on edge, but that they’re making extra sure that doors are locked before they go to bed.

“It’s strange to think it happened just down the street, yet we never heard or saw a thing,” said another neighbor. “But then, this is a neighborhood of early risers, and we go to bed early.” The neighborhood around Silver Lake Road and Ramsey County Road H2 is somewhat remote there’s a big wooded area on one corner, a few modest houses and double bungalows on the others. No sidewalks-just four long, straight roads leading away from the intersection.

The store’s manager, who asked not to be named, said the store has taken new precautions, but added, “I’m not sure I’d want to see the specifics in print.” Since the slaying, one employee has quit and the store has eliminated the 11 pm to 7 am shift because no one will work it, said Mike McDermott, 7-Eleven zone manager for Minnesota.

McDermott said there had been no other violent incidents at the store..
It was normal for an employee to work the late shift alone, the store manager said, because there is too little night business to justify two employees.

A cashier at a Tom Thumb store two blocks away on Knollwood Avenue said the killing made her nervous.
“It makes you more aware, had been scared before without realizing it. Now I realize it. I think it’d be crazy working alone at night. I’m hardly ever alone.

“I was running the store last Sunday (four days after the killing), and one time when there weren’t any customers, I was in the back doing some quick work.

When I got back up to the counter, there was a woman here who was just frantic. She kept saying, ‘Where were you? Where were you?’

Monette, who held a business degree from St. Theresa’s College in Winona, lived with her parents at [removed] S. 28th Ave., Minneapolis, and had worked at the store only since Feb. 11. But the manager said she knew Monette well.

“She worked for me. It doesn’t take long to get to know someone when you work closely with them. She was as nice a person as you could ask for, and she was on her way up.” On the counter was a coffee can labeled “Toni Monette Memorial Fund.”

“I’m not really scared to work here now I just miss her,” the manager added. “It’s kind of spooky coming in and not seeing her face.”

Deana Patnode of Inver Grove Heights, was last seen 26 October 1982 near a bar in St. Paul. Her body was found almost seven years later by a mushroom hunter, officials believed she had been dead at least a year.

Deana was found in a ditch in 20 May 1989 south of Kellogg in Wabasha County. Deana’s remains were identified March 2009, when a neighbor thought a cold case playing card looked like Deana. DNA was used from a sister of Deana and was a match!

PRESS RELEASE
March 16, 2009

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announces major break in 1989 Wabasha County Jane Doe – COLD CASE.

For the first time, the Minnesota Cold Case Playing Cards initiative, which began in October 2008, has played a role in solving a case.

Deana Patnode

The victim was located May 20, 1989 south of Kellogg, Wabasha County, Minnesota. She was identified as Deana Marie Patnode, 23, of Inver Grove Heights in March 2009 via DNA after the Minnesota BCA received a tip from an image on a card in a deck of MN Cold Case Playing Cards that were released in October 2008. The tipster said he thought the image on the playing card looked similar to his neighbor who had disappeared in the 1980s. Authorities were able to match DNA of Patnode after locating a family member.

Patnode was last seen leaving the Buck Board bar on Concord Boulevard with a friend in South St. Paul on October 26, 1982. Her remains were found almost seven years later.

THIS CASE IS NOW AN ACTIVE HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION.
Any tips should be phoned in to the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Department
Aniya mom, Antrice Sease drove her directly to the Hennepin County Medical Center. Aniya was in critical condition. Sadly Aniya succumb to her injuries on 19 May 2021.

Patrick Dembley arrested charged and guilty of shooting man, same gun that killed Aniya.

The gun that killed Aniya, was also used in a shooting that paralyzed a 19-year-old man who was shot in his car while sitting at Mayslack’s bar in Northeast Minneapolis. Camera’s in the area lead to the arrest of Patrick Dembley. Dembley was arrested and released on $80k bail. He is from Maple Grove. Dembley has admitted to carrying a gun at a Northeast Minneapolis bar in 2021 when he shot and injured a man. Police say at least one casing from the same weapon was found in the area where Aniya Allen was killed only days later. In 2022, Dembley was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison for seriously injuring the man.

Vanessa Jensen 19 had gone with her cousins to watch street racing in Minneapolis when she was shoot 3 times and killed on the 2200 block of North Second Street at about 1:30 am on 5 June 2021.

Vanessa was shot three times, one in each arm and one in her chest while she was watching street takeovers at North Second street and North 22nd Avenue, Minneapolis. Vanessa and her cousins were in the front row watching street racing, burnouts and donuts by “Hot Rodders”. A shooting broke out, and if you watch any videos online, a shooting always seems to breakout. Vanessa and her cousins thought it was fireworks then realized it was gun shots. They ran back to their vehicle and that’s when she told her cousins she was shot. They rushed her to the hospital where she passed away.

Nov. 30, 2001: Arrest made in teen’s death

Victim is St. Paul boy, 17; motive remains unclear
By JIM ADAMS Star Tribune

Authorities have identified the homicide victim found Saturday in Shakopee as a St. Paul teenager who had left home a day earlier with a man.

Jonathan Easterling, 17, apparently died from head injuries, said Dr. Lindsey Thomas, head of the Minnesota Regional Coroner’s Office in Hastings.

Shakopee Deputy Police Chief Jerry Poole said that a suspect has been arrested and that the investigation continues. He said that no weapon was recovered and that the motive is still unclear.

Easterling’s family last saw him the morning of Nov. 23, when he talked with a man on the phone and then left in a car with him, said his mother, Oraetta West. She said she doesn’t know why her son would have gone to Shakopee, where police found his body the next morning in a ditch.

His sister, Angelica Easterling, 16, said he seemed uncertain while waiting to be picked up about whether he should go with the man. She said the family called hospitals and authorities trying to find him Sunday, but didn’t know what happened until detectives came to their East Side house Monday evening. He didn’t have identification when he was found.

“He was very unselfish. He was the type of kid if another kid was being bullied, he would try to protect that kid,” West said. Her son, the oldest of four siblings, liked sketching cars and playing clarinet, she said. He wasn’t attending school and was searching for what he wanted to do in life, she said.

Angelica Easterling said her brother was full of life and sensitive to others’ feelings. “He could make bad situations funny,” she said. He also did impersonations of family members, including his mother, “that had me cracked up,” his mom recalled.
“He had a free spirit.”

Berneice Easterling, who lived with the family this year, said her grandson was always helpful. “Sometimes he would come in late and say, `Grandma, is there anything you want?’ ” she said. “He was very caring.”

She left the family home in the afternoon to go to a babysitting job. The plan for Peggy was to go to the town of St. James. He parents figured something was wrong when she didn’t return home on Sunday night 10 August 1969! A month later 11 September 1969 Peggy’s body was found in a corn field off Nicollet County Road 13 in North Mankato now Benson Park.

Peggy died from being struck on the head.

NORTH MANKATO — Fifty years ago this month, a North Mankato teen’s body was found in a corn field north of the city.

Peggy Broas disappeared after leaving her parents’ home at 238 Wheeler Ave. on Aug. 9, 1969. Her body was found on Sept. 11.

Throughout five decades, investigators have continued seeking information that would lead them to discover who ended the 17-year-old’s life.

“That case remains unsolved, unfortunately,” Nicollet County Chief Deputy Karl Jensen said.

“The problem is there is no physical evidence,” said Marc T. Chadderdon, criminal investigator with the Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office.

Unlike today’s criminal investigations, in 1969 DNA was not being collected and crime scenes were photographed by individuals not trained in law enforcement procedures, he said.

Events leading up to the murder were documented in 1969.

Peggy’s parents had last seen her on a Saturday afternoon as she left for a babysitting job in Mankato. They’d expected her to be back Sunday morning. She wasn’t, so the family assumed she was still working and went ahead with plans to go to St. James.

They suspected something was wrong when she still hadn’t returned Sunday night. Police investigated, receiving reports she had been seen in Mankato and at the Nicollet County Fair in St. Peter that Sunday. Those initial reports weren’t confirmed.

Investigators determined Peggy died as the result of being struck on the head.

The remains of another girl, 14-year-old Sandra Meinke of Webster, had been found in a wooded area north of Montgomery, Minnesota, — on the same day Peggy’s body was found.

The Meinke case was later solved and a 39-year-old Prior Lake man, James H. Johnson, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Investigators have never been able to link Johnson to the murder of Peggy Broas.

“They did a lot of leg work on that one, and there was no connection,” Jensen said.

“It was such a horrible coincidence, two rural teens murdered at about the same time,” Chadderdon said.

Jensen was only 3 years old in 1969, but he remembers hearing his father, Richard Jensen, describe the Broas case.

The elder Jensen was a deputy who was in the corn field off Nicollet County Road 13, near what is now North Mankato’s Benson Park, the day Peggy’s body was found.

“He talked about it over the years … He went to his grave wanting to have the case solved,” Karl Jensen told a Free Press reporter during an interview in November 2008 about an idea he had to help solve the case and give hope to the survivors.

He knew of a deck of playing cards being designed through the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and Department of Corrections. Cards featuring photos and information about cold-case victims, who at that time included Jacob Wetterling, comprised the decks intended for delivery to the hands of prison and jail inmates throughout the state.

Investigators hoped card-game conversations would provide leads they could track down.

A similar effort in Florida already had solved two cold cases there.

Karl Jensen, who was an investigator before he was named chief deputy in 2003, had contacted Lynn Broas about including his sister’s photo on a card in a Minnesota-specific deck.

“We had quite a conversation,” Lynn told The Free Press in 2008. “We talked about how a lot of time had passed and that people might want to clear their conscience.”

Peggy’s card, the nine of spades, includes her picture, the day she was last seen alive, the day her body was found and that she died as a result of blunt force trauma.

Peggy’s father W.E. Broas died in 2002. Her mother Arvellis Brummund died in 2018.

Chadderdon, along with a Bureau of Criminal Affairs officer, decided in 2013 to conduct re-interviews of surviving family members and friends of the murdered teen.

“I was surprised how much people remembered about Peggy,” Chadderdon said.

Her yearbook picture and a newspaper clipping about her death are included on a website created by reunion organizers for Mankato High School Class of 1969’s website.

Nicollet County Sheriff’s Office is well aware of this year’s milestone anniversary of the North Mankato teen’s unsolved murder, Jensen said. He’s not given up on the hope someone’s memory will be jogged and a new detail will surface.

“We’ve been hoping to again put a spotlight on it,” Jensen said.

Anyone with information about Peggy’s death should contact Chadderdon at 934-7121 or the BCA tipline at 877-996-6222.

Leona 83, was found stabbed, beaten and strangled on 5 October 1987, in her duplex residence at 328 Seventh St. South in Virginia.

Evidence collected at the scene was tested by the BCA’s Forensic Science Services, but did not yield any information that could definitively point to a suspect in the case, at the time.

While leads went cold, Virginia Police Department investigators and BCA agents continued to work the case, and as forensic testing capabilities improved, the BCA lab periodically reexamined the evidence.

Bruce Wayne Cameron

Eventually, two fingerprints and a palm print were located on a bedroom door which was next to where Leona’s body was found. The prints belonged to rson, who would have been 16 at the time of the murder.

Cameron was arrested 4 June 2015. Cameron was arraigned in St. Louis County District Court on a charge of intentional 2nd-degree murder. Bail was set at $1m.

The defendant admitted that he was most likely drunk that night. He said he came down the back stairwell to Mrs. Maslowski’s residence, the door was not locked and he went into the kitchen looking for alcohol to drink. The woman confronted him. He thought she was moving toward a telephone. He said he punched her in the face, pushed her down, continued to hit her with an object from her residence and possibly choked her.

Cameron said he didn’t know if a knife was involved, but that all of her injuries would have been caused by him. He said she was lying on the floor when he left and that he didn’t steal anything. [Kare11]

Judge David Ackerson [who is now retired] threw out Cameron’s confession as inadmissible.

Cameron’s attorney argued the confession was coerced and his client was misled into believing he would face only juvenile charges.

The judge’s order says Cameron must be freed by 31 October 2016.

And with that, you can make your own conclusions!

Karla Jo Nieland was beaten to death and found 17 May 1981 at around 330am in John Keep car, her boyfriend. Keep was arrested and went to trial and was acquitted.

According to articles I’ve read, the community and Nieland family were stunned at the verdict. Sadly both her parents have passed away and will never see Justice served.

According to the article below [From the Minneapolis Tribune (now the Star Tribune) August 8, 1982]

• Keep was 6 beers into the party when he and Karla arrived. She didn’t want to be there when Keep drank. Keep gave Karla the keys for the car. When he wanted the keys, she refused to give them to him because he had been drinking. After that she disappeared. Keep was asking if anyone had seen Karla.

• Karla’s shirt, sweater and bra were discovered in a field on the farm’s property, near the location where Keep’s shirt and car keys were discovered.

• Roland Fiebranz, a friend of Keep stated after the party he saw Karla appear between the buildings. He said he went to bed and left Karla with Keep. Keep denied he reunited with Karla and someone hit him on the head. He woke to find Karla dead in the car. [Fiebranz took a polygraph to prove that he had nothing to do with Karla’s murder]

• Jackie Hermel, Fiebranz sister testified that she was sleeping with her husband and next Fiebranz. She was woken by Keep pounding on the door at 4 am. She said Keep tried to wake up Fiebranz yelling “Rocky, Rocky. Wake up! Wake up! Karla’s dead! Karla’s dead! I killed her!” She ran outside to see Keep drive off in Rocky’s car and found Karla in Keeps red mustang, dead!

There was a podcast that I wish I could listen to but it wiped off the internet and had no luck finding a backup anywhere: Uncracked, the Karla Jo Nieland Story. There were 3 episodes, all gone. There was also a website, but it’s deleted.

I have found this article on the trial:

Incident Location: Crystal, MN
Originating Agency: Crystal Police Department

Details: On February 8, 1988 Dirk Van Slooten was found shot to death in the yard of his home in Crystal. The suspect/s fired numerous gunshots at the victim and then fled the scene, leaving Dirk in the snow.

Michael Charles Beatty was the main suspect, but was never arrested or charged for the murder.
Beatty was federally charged with mail fraud, plead guilty and was sentenced to 41 months.

I did find this: Just very briefly, Your Honor. I would like to speak on behalf of the victims in this case. Obviously I don’t represent them, but I am their only voice in court. Mr. Short has on behalf of Mr. Beatty made a number of comments about the fact that [Beatty] used his loved ones’ monies for his venture–as if that were proof of good faith. I believe it is more proof of the fact that he also took advantage of his loved ones. They obviously do not feel that way.

But many of the people who were taken advantage of by Mr. Beatty were his friends, former friends, and these are people who, for example, include a family who had saved money for college, and their son was unable to go to college because of Mr. Beatty, there are people who had received a [sic] inheritance, a woman who had worked a whole lifetime barely making a salary, finally receiving an inheritance, and it was all taken by Mr. Beatty and Mr. Van Slooten, there are other people who lost all their retirement funds.

Cheri Prokop, 23 was found dead shortly after noon on 2 December 1988 by strangulation. Her 4-year-old daughter was found unharmed inside the apartment. Police believe two intruders, seen by the little girl, killed her mother.

When police arrived they found a ground level window removed. The apartment door was also unlocked. When police entered the apartment they found Cheryl’s daughter Katelyn unharmed. They found Cheryl upstairs in the hallway between the bedrooms strangled with the cord from her blinds.

None of the neighbors heard a thing.
