Motherway: No evidence of connection between Abel and brother’s 2007 disappearance

By Mike Christopherson, Managing Editor
Crookston Daily Times
Posted Feb 09, 2012 @ 12:30 PM
Crookston

The fatal stabbing of Jerome Abel, 58, in Crookston last Sunday night, allegedly at the hands of his son, 27-year-old Jacob Abel, has revived talk in and around Crookston of Jacob’s older brother, Joshua Abel, who went missing in April 2007 in Marshall County and hasn’t been seen since.

Specifically, Crookston Police Chief Tim Motherway told the Times today, people seem to be wondering if there’s any chance that Jacob, who’s accused of stabbing his father 24 times in a Broadway Apartments unit Feb. 5, had something to do with his older brother’s disappearance.

He didn’t, Motherway said.

Joshua Abel, 29 at the time, was reported missing on April 30, 2007. A Crookston resident, he was last seen on April 27. His vehicle was subsequently found with the keys in it on the family’s farmstead in northern Marshall County, near Stephen. Motherway said a single set of footprints was observed leading away from the vehicle. During the investigation, he said, a witness reported seeing Joshua in the area around that time, possibly with a firearm. Authorities conducted an extensive search of the area but found nothing.

Motherway said Crookston Police consulted with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension at that time and did so again in the wake of Sunday’s homicide in Crookston, but that there remains no evidence to indicate that Jacob Abel had anything to do with his brother’s disappearance.

There’s no evidence of foul play and there’s no suspicion of foul play, Motherway said. Jacob was interviewed back then, and he was cooperative. Other than the fact that they are brothers, there’s no other connection.

Jacob Abel made his first court appearance in Crookston on Tuesday, but because of his erratic behavior since his arrest and in the courtroom and his history of mental health issues, proceedings were put on hold so he can undergo a mental competency evaluation at the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter.

Son Charged with First Degree Murder 08 Feb 12

District Judge Kurt Marben has ordered a Rule #20 psychological evaluation in the case of a Crookston man charged with murder in the death of his father.

Judge Marben made the ruling yesterday in the case of 27 year old Jacob Abel, of Crookston, during a bizarre First Appearance in Polk County District Court.

Police say they found Jacob with blood on his clothes, a knife in hand in an apartment hallway Sunday morning, his father 58 year old Jerome Abel of Crookston dead inside the apartment the victim of more than 2 dozen stab wounds. Jacob has been charged with First and Second Degree Murder, with Public Defenders assigned to the case. Judge Marben set bond Tuesday at a half million dollars.

The initial hearing had to be suspended Tuesday morning, after Jacob Abel interrupted proceedings with what witnessed called a largely incomprehensible tirade. When Judge Marben asked Able if he was able to afford an attorney or wanted one appointed, the defendant told the judge he wanted to go home. Proceedings resumed Tuesday afternoon after an attorney had been appointed.

Jacob is the brother of Joshua Abel, the missing Crookston man last seen in an unsolved disappearance more than 5 years ago in Marshall County. Joshua is the son of the murder victim, Jerome Abel.

His abandoned vehicle was found the following day, but Achermann was never found. It remains unclear whether Achermann’s disappearance was the result of foul play.

The next day, Achermann’s light blue 1995 Chevrolet Caprice station wagon was found stuck in the mud in a wooded area at the end of a minimum maintenance road off County Road 32, ten miles from Achermann’s Leader, Minnesota home. A photo of the car is posted with this case summary. Groceries Achermann had bought were inside it, as well as prescription medication for his wife, but there was no sign of him at the scene and his cane and the car keys were also missing.

Achermann’s family stated he was in good health at the time of his disappearance and didn’t suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease or any other form of dementia. He had been married for fifty years by 2009 and has eight children, thirteen foster children and twenty-three grandchildren.

He had planned to speak at his granddaughter’s wedding, which was scheduled for the day after his disappearance. Since he went missing, there’s been no activity on his bank account or credit cards. An extensive search of the area turned up no sign of him. Foul play is not suspected in his case, but it remains unsolved.

He was declared legally deceased on July 24, 2013.
