In September 2025 Theah Russell, 18 a daycare worker at Rocking Horse Ranch daycare, intentionally suffocated Harvey Muklebust, 11 months old.

Savage police were called to the Rocking Horse Ranch daycare on 19 September 2025 for a 4-month old who had blood around her mouth and foam coming out of her mouth. She started breathing and was taken to the hospital by her parents! The 4-month old had no further issues that weekend. On Monday 22 September 2025 the 4-month old returned to the day care healthy at 8:30 am. A short time after that 4-month old was found to be unresponsive with blood around her nose and mouth. The parents notified and they returned to the cienter and transported that child to the hospital. The pd was not called to that incident.

At approximately 10 am Theah Loudemia Russell called 911 that an 11-month old was unresponsive. Police, fire and ems responded immediately and found Harvey Muklebust. Life saving efforts were immediately started. Harvey was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced at 11:34 am.

On 13 January 2026 Russell confessed to “intentionally suffocating” Harvey and the other child “in an attention-seeking act,” according to Savage Police Chief Brady Juell. He added the employee “confessed to the attempted murder of our first victim on two occasions and to the murder of Harvey Muklebust.”

Russell had only worked at the day care for three weeks before Harvey’s death.

On Thursday 15 January 2026 Russell’s charged were upgraded from 2nd degree murder.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Police investigating infant death at Savage daycare

Savage, Minnesota- September 25, 2025 – The Savage Police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continue to investigate what caused the death of an infant on Monday, September 22, at Rocking Horse Ranch Childcare.

Savage Police attended the autopsy, but final results and toxicology reports typically take several months. Investigators have interviewed multiple individuals, thoroughly examined the scene, and sent evidence to the laboratory for testing.

This investigation is ongoing and comprehensive, and investigators are not ruling out any possible causes. Police will provide updates when new information becomes available for public release. Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for the family and in keeping with state law, the child’s name will not be made public.

Anyone with information about this incident can contact Detective Sergeant Andrew Dahmes at 952-882-2601.

Minnesota Department of Human Services MDHS, MN state has suspended Rocking Horse Ranch’s license on 23 September 2025, and that suspension is under appeal.

Baby Angel complaint:
On or about September 5, 2011, at approximately 2:22 pm, Winona County Sheriffs Deputies (collectively “Deputies”) responded to a call concerning a deceased newborn that was found floating in the Mississippi River. The infant was found inside a bag floating on the Minnesota side of the river within the border of Winona County, Minnesota, approximately seven miles south of the City of Winona. The bag containing the infant was found floating in the water by boaters. The inside of the bag also contained a pendant, incense, and several angel figurines.

On September 6, 2011, an autopsy was conducted on the infant. The medical examiner determined the infant appeared to be full-term and was likely a recent birth within a day or two. The infant had a four-inch section of the umbilical cord attached that appeared to have been cut with a sharp-edged instrument. It did not appear the umbilical cord was cut by a medical provider which indicated the infant did not receive medical treatment during or after birth. The medical examiner noted several fractures on the front and side of the infant’s skull.

There was bleeding on the brain. There was no evidence of medical intervention on the infant. A 2024 updated autopsy review concluded this “normally developed term female infant sustained injuries of the head while alive.”

The evidence shows the skull fractures were sustained while the infant was alive. This is not the type of injury that would have occurred with the assistance of a medical professional during delivery. The incidents of skull fractures during a medically assisted delivery are very low and generally occur in only 2.9% of cases where forceps were used during the birthing process. There is no evidence that medical care was provided during or immediately after delivery. The resultant brain hemorrhages from the skull fractures could have been treated medically and decreased the likelihood of death.

The funeral for Baby Angel was 5 April 2012.

Jennifer Nichole Baechle, 43, is facing two counts of second-degree manslaughter for allegedly placing her newborn in a white tote bag and sending it down the Mississippi River in 2011.

➡️ 24 April 2025 court hearing: Baechle’s unconditional bail was set at $200,000 with her conditional bail set at $20,000 provided that she doesn’t leave the state and is monitored via a GPS. The next court hearing is scheduled for 7 July 2025.

Jennifer Baechle complaint:
On or about May 24, 2023, Deputies requested Defendant provide a voluntary DNA sample. Defendant requested time to think about giving a sample and said she would get back in touch with Deputies. On June 1, 2023, Defendant requested additional time to research the company Deputies were using for genealogy analysis. Deputies then received a letter from a criminal defense lawyer requesting any future contact with Defendant be made through counsel.

Deputies conducted a trash pull search of Defendant’s trash. Deputies collected the trash that was set outside for pickup by the trash collection company. A search of the trash bags revealed information connected to Defendant’s household. Deputies also located a discarded female hygiene product. These items were sent to the BCA laboratory for testing and comparison to the DNA of the infant. The BCA’s report on the DNA testing and comparison confirmed that the infant, found in the bag floating in the Mississippi River on September 5, 2011, could be the biological child of Defendant.

On or about March 19, 2024, Deputies served a search warrant on Defendant to collect DNA. Defendant’s DNA was submitted to the BCA laboratory for testing. The DNA test results indicated the genetic results obtained from the unidentified female infant are 570,000 times more likely to occur in a biological child of Defendant than in someone unrelated to Defendant. The report concluded that this was very strong evidence to support the biological relationship between Defendant and the unidentified female infant as being a biological mother daughter relationship. As the biological mother of the infant, Defendant had a duty to seek medical care on behalf of the infant during pregnancy, birth, and immediately after birth.

Deputies spoke with members of Defendant’s family. The family told Deputies they had not had personal contact with Defendant during 2011. They said Defendant was living in her van in the Winona, Minnesota, area in 2011. Deputies showed Defendant’s family members photographs of the items found with the infant in the bag. Family members immediately recognized the blue pendant as belonging to Defendant. Deputies were also told that Defendant collected angels. They described giving an angel ornament to Defendant every Christmas.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A federal jury found Derrick John Thompson guilty of illegal possession of a firearm and fentanyl following a deadly vehicle crash that killed five victims, announced U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger.

Following a five-day trial in U.S. District Court before Judge Jeffrey M. Bryan, Thompson, 28, was found guilty of one count of possessing with intent to distribute fentanyl, one count of possessing a firearm as a felon, and one count of carrying a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.

Thompson has not been to trial for the Murders of these ladies:

According to evidence presented at trial, on June 16, 2023, a trooper with the Minnesota State Patrol observed a black Cadillac Escalade speeding north on I-35W, traveling at 95 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour speed zone. The trooper observed the driver, later identified as Thompson, abruptly cut across four lanes of traffic to exit the freeway at the Lake Street exit. The trooper began following the SUV but did not activate the emergency lights or sirens because the trooper did not want to attempt a traffic stop on city streets given the Escalade’s dangerous driving. At the intersection of 2nd Avenue South and East Lake Street, Thompson sped through a red light at the intersection without stopping or slowing. The SUV struck at full speed the driver’s side of a Honda Civic that was traveling lawfully through the intersection. All five occupants of the Honda Civic, four adult females and one juvenile female, were killed. When law enforcement responded to the scene of the crash, witnesses told officers where Thompson fled. Officers found Thompson, wearing clothing that matched the description given by witnesses, sitting on the curb outside of a nearby restaurant. Officers detained Thompson, who was later transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for evaluation.

According to evidence presented at trial, an officer found at the scene a Hertz rental record for the Cadillac Escalade indicating that Thompson rented the vehicle from a Hertz located at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport approximately 30 minutes before the crash. After obtaining a warrant to search the vehicle, officers found a black leather bag on the front passenger side floor that contained a loaded Glock pistol with an extended magazine, as well as three baggies containing more than 2,000 blue “M-Box 30” fentanyl pills, a baggie containing an additional 14 grams of fentanyl powder, a baggie containing 35 grams of cocaine, and a digital scale. Subsequent testing determined that Thompson’s DNA was present on the firearm, the fentanyl powder, and the cocaine. A search of Thompson’s phone found dozens of texts indicating fentanyl deals.

Because Thompson has multiple prior felony convictions, he is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.

This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI, the Minneapolis Police Department, the Minnesota State Patrol, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and the Minneapolis–St. Paul Airport Police Department, in coordination with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas Calhoun-Lopez and Ruth S. Shnider tried the case.

Barbara Sue Frost murder is an Anoka County unsolved murder. Anoka County has just received a federal grant of $1.15m to work on 38 unsolved homicides dating back to 1965. Barbara Frost is one of them.

Police identify 17-year-old stabbing victim
Star Tribune Tuesday 27 August 1985

The mutilated body of a girl found Saturday in a drainage ditch in East Bethel was identified Monday as that of Barbara Sue Frost, a 17-year-old high school dropout who friends said had alcohol problems.

Anoka County sheriffs Investigators said yesterday that they suspect that the killer is the person who picked Frost up while she was hitchhiking Friday night. That person is still being sought.

Frost had been stabbed at least 20 times in the chest and other upper portions of her body, said Dr. Joseph
coroner. He said that she died of her stab wounds, that there was no sign of a struggle where her body was found and that she had not been sexually abused.

The body appears to have been moved to the drainage ditch after the slaying, Investigators in the Anoka County Sheriff’s Department said. On the basis of the autopsy reports, they estimated that she was killed late Friday night or early Saturday morning [24 August 1985]. The fully clothed body was discovered face down in the ditch at 2:23 p.m. north of County Rd. 22 and east of Hwy. 65 by a farmer who had been mowing tall grass.

We think she was hitchhiking south on Hwy. 65 and that whoever killed her had to know the area pretty well, knew the roads, because there’s not a lot of traffic in that area,” said Capt. Bill Hoogestraat of the Anoka County sheriffs major crimes.

No arrests have been made, but Hoogestraat said investigators were confident of several leads. One of the problems hampering investigators is that the rain Saturday morning left few tire tracks at the scene.

In the last several months Frost had been living intermittently at a house in Blaine with three men who were recovering alcoholics. She attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with them in Fridley.

“She was a ‘runner’ and a troubled young lady who was chemically dependent, but lately she’d been working hard trying to stay sober,” said Ed Nelson, one of the men at the house.

You could see a lot of pain and hurt in that girl’s eyes, he said. “Somebody was saying the other day that they thought one of our best meetings was two weeks ago when she led a discussion group on how people can’t run away from their problems and how she, since she knew she had a long history of running away from problems, had finally learned there were no quick solutions, that you had to ride it out.

“I always thought that was pretty good thought for a person who was 17 years old and in trouble. She was no dummy, that’s for sure.”

Nelson said he last saw her a week ago and described her as “upbeat, real happy.” partly because she mentioned she was going to be getting a new job and would no longer have to earn money as a maid in Downtown Minneapolis.

Frost told Nelson that her father had died about five years ago, he said, and that the death had caused her severe emotional problems. Her mother, Carol Patterson [passed away 2 June 2008] lives in Minneapolis.

Patricia Carlson, one of Frost’s two sisters, said she didn’t know Frost’s whereabouts Friday.

“My sister never deserved this, no-body deserves what happened to her,” Patterson said. She said many of her sister’s problems started after their father’s death.

When he died, I think a part of her died too. They were very close.” For at least the last six months she had been attending the sobriety meetings and was recently working toward getting her general education diploma, said Nelson. Frost dropped out of St. Francis High School in 1982, said a school spokesman.

“Hitchhiking was the main way she got herself around, and despite all our warnings not to do it, she felt it necessary to do it, and she just ran into the wrong, crazy person and that was it,” said Nelson. “We never ran together, we just tried to stay sober together and support each other.”

Police get description of suspect in slaying of girl found in ditch
Star tribune Friday 30 August 1985

Anoka County sheriff’s investigators said Thursday that they have a description of a suspect in last weekend’s slaying of a 17-year-old girl from St. Francis, Minn.

Officials yesterday released a sketch of the suspect drawn from a description received from a gas station attendant, who said he had seen the girl in the gas station with the man the night before her body was found.

The body of Barbara Sue Frost was found in a drainage ditch in East Bethel Saturday afternoon by a farmer who was mowing tall grass. She had been stabbed more than 20 times in the chest and upper body, but had not been sexually assaulted. The murder weapon penetrated her heart several times from the front and the back, officials said.

Authorities are seeking a white man, between 35 and 40 years old, about 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4 with a trim build and short, neat, sandy-colored hair parted on the left. The man also had a noticeable cleft chin, a prominent Adam’s apple and a small bump on the bridge of his nose that might indicate it had once been broken. He was driving a tan, late model Volvo station wagon with Minnesota license plates beginning with the letters NOX or NOZ. He also was wearing a gold watch with diamonds or similar stones on the face. Anoka County Undersheriff Donald Dwyer said that he had sent the license information to the state highway department but that the department had not identified a specific car yesterday afternoon.

Dwyer said investigators received the information from an attendant at a gas station at 45th and Lyndale Ave. N, in Minneapolis. The attendant told authorities that he knew the girl and that he saw her with the man in the gas station about 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Dwyer also said that the girl called one of the men with whom she lived in Blaine at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday and that there was party noise in the background. She did not indicate that she was in trouble, investigators said, and the men with whom she shared the house have been cleared as suspects.

Investigators believe the suspect picked up Frost while she was hitchhiking south on Hwy. 65.

Frost was an “inveterate hitchhiker” who also carried a knife because, she said, drivers had tried to take advantage of her, Dwyer said.

Authorities have not found the knife.

Officials ask that people with information on the crime or the suspect call the Anoka County major crime…

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and The Mounds View Police Department are looking for tips in an unsolved homicide.

The victim, 27 year old Toni Lanae [Talarico] Monette, had been working alone as a clerk at the 7-11 store located on Silver Lake Road in Mounds View, MN on March 25, 1981. In the early morning hours, a customer entered the store and discovered the victim’s body. Toni had been violently attacked and stabbed numerous times, resulting in her death. The victim left behind two young children at the time of the homicide.

From: The Minneapolis Star 2 April 1981
By DAVE HAGE
The Minneapolis Star

Toni Monette wasn’t scheduled to work the night she was slain. Management at the 7-Eleven store at 7295 Silver Lake Road in Mounds View had hired another cashier, and protocol says the rookie works the 11 pm to 7 am shift. But Monette substituted for the newcomer that night, and wound up on the floor with 10 stab wounds.

Mounds View reacted with dismay this week to its first slaying in years. It occurred early March 25, 1981.
Mounds View Police, aided by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, haven’t arrested anyone or established a motive for the killing of the 26-year-old cashier. Police said no money was taken from the store and there was no sign of sexual assault.

Police checked the store about 2:30 am, the cash register tape indicated a sale at 3:10 am and a customer found Monette dead at 4:30 am. The apparent lack of motive has left neighbors a little nervous.

“I just wonder if there’s this thing wandering around our neighborhood, thinking, ‘Hmmm, I’ll try Mounds View for a while,'” said a woman who lives half a block away on Ramsey County Road H2. “I wasn’t too happy walking home from choir practice at Messiah Lutheran church Wednesday night. I made sure my husband was watching for me.

Two other neighbors said they aren’t on edge, but that they’re making extra sure that doors are locked before they go to bed.

“It’s strange to think it happened just down the street, yet we never heard or saw a thing,” said another neighbor. “But then, this is a neighborhood of early risers, and we go to bed early.” The neighborhood around Silver Lake Road and Ramsey County Road H2 is somewhat remote there’s a big wooded area on one corner, a few modest houses and double bungalows on the others. No sidewalks-just four long, straight roads leading away from the intersection.

The store’s manager, who asked not to be named, said the store has taken new precautions, but added, “I’m not sure I’d want to see the specifics in print.” Since the slaying, one employee has quit and the store has eliminated the 11 pm to 7 am shift because no one will work it, said Mike McDermott, 7-Eleven zone manager for Minnesota.

McDermott said there had been no other violent incidents at the store..
It was normal for an employee to work the late shift alone, the store manager said, because there is too little night business to justify two employees.

A cashier at a Tom Thumb store two blocks away on Knollwood Avenue said the killing made her nervous.
“It makes you more aware, had been scared before without realizing it. Now I realize it. I think it’d be crazy working alone at night. I’m hardly ever alone.

“I was running the store last Sunday (four days after the killing), and one time when there weren’t any customers, I was in the back doing some quick work.

When I got back up to the counter, there was a woman here who was just frantic. She kept saying, ‘Where were you? Where were you?’

Monette, who held a business degree from St. Theresa’s College in Winona, lived with her parents at [removed] S. 28th Ave., Minneapolis, and had worked at the store only since Feb. 11. But the manager said she knew Monette well.

“She worked for me. It doesn’t take long to get to know someone when you work closely with them. She was as nice a person as you could ask for, and she was on her way up.” On the counter was a coffee can labeled “Toni Monette Memorial Fund.”

“I’m not really scared to work here now I just miss her,” the manager added. “It’s kind of spooky coming in and not seeing her face.”

Deana Patnode of Inver Grove Heights, was last seen 26 October 1982 near a bar in St. Paul. Her body was found almost seven years later by a mushroom hunter, officials believed she had been dead at least a year.

Deana was found in a ditch in 20 May 1989 south of Kellogg in Wabasha County. Deana’s remains were identified March 2009, when a neighbor thought a cold case playing card looked like Deana. DNA was used from a sister of Deana and was a match!

PRESS RELEASE
March 16, 2009

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announces major break in 1989 Wabasha County Jane Doe – COLD CASE.

For the first time, the Minnesota Cold Case Playing Cards initiative, which began in October 2008, has played a role in solving a case.

Deana Patnode

The victim was located May 20, 1989 south of Kellogg, Wabasha County, Minnesota. She was identified as Deana Marie Patnode, 23, of Inver Grove Heights in March 2009 via DNA after the Minnesota BCA received a tip from an image on a card in a deck of MN Cold Case Playing Cards that were released in October 2008. The tipster said he thought the image on the playing card looked similar to his neighbor who had disappeared in the 1980s. Authorities were able to match DNA of Patnode after locating a family member.

Patnode was last seen leaving the Buck Board bar on Concord Boulevard with a friend in South St. Paul on October 26, 1982. Her remains were found almost seven years later.

THIS CASE IS NOW AN ACTIVE HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION.
Any tips should be phoned in to the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Department
